P: Does not remember original file number when exporting an AI Denoise Image

Explorer ,
May 03, 2023 May 03, 2023

Copy link to clipboard

Copied

When exporting an image with the option "Custom name - original file number", LrC fails to do so if the image is denoised using the new AI functionality. Instead you get the "Custom name - Sequence" instead.

OS: Windows 10,
LrC build no: 202304101834-a085245c

Steps to reproduce: Denoise an image using the new AI-function (button above the denoise sliders), export using "Custom name - original file number".
Result: The images get sequence number in the file name instead of image number. (The "Enhanced" addition to the name seems to confuse the export function. Should be fairly easy to parse or link back to the original file.)
Expected result: The exported images should have the original file number.

I just want a DNG with the original RAW filename WITHOUT the "Enhanced" part. 12345.cr3 to 12345.dng.

I don't see a way to use Lightroom's renaming feature to accomplish this so right now, I do it manually for each file which is painful and a huge waste of time.

PLEASE PLEASE fix this.

@ExUSA: "I just want a DNG with the original RAW filename WITHOUT the "Enhanced" part. 12345.cr3 to 12345.dng."

That's a different issue from the bug discussed here. Please add your constructive opinion and upvote here:

"I don't see a way to use Lightroom's renaming feature to accomplish this so right now, I do it manually for each file which is painful and a huge waste of time."

You could rename a batch of the files back to use the original file name using a renaming template with the Preserved Filename token:

My apologies, i dodn't realize. But this doesn't work? The new dng "Preserved Filename" is NOT the original CR3 filename.

@ExUSA: "The new dng "Preserved Filename" is NOT the original CR3 filename."

It usually is the original .cr3 file name. See this screen recording for an example:

https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/rip5bd0fea64e2etmdypy/rename-enhanced.2025-02-13.mp4?rlkey=kerqsut1du...

To troubleshoot this, it helps to show the Preserved Filename field in the Metadata > Default panel. Click Customize at the bottom of the panel to add the field.

If at any step in that video what you're seeing doesn't correspond to what's in the video, please attach a full-resolution screenshot (not a phone pic) of the entire LR window showing what you see.

Hi! I tested this and nope. There is nothing in preserved filename.

Workflow-

copy files from memory card to drive using Finder

import in place

enhance a few selected files

Rename is terribly designed, you can't click and rename in the grid view or Develop mode, hitting F2 is useless as there is no way to simply click and rename (like both Windows and Mac UI) and Preserve Filename just puts the name WITH the "Enhanced" part intact.

The only way I have found to rename these files is manually, one by one, in Library mode. This is user-hostile and poor design.

@ExUSA, something is clearly different in your situation from the screen recording I posted above. Please upload a sample .cr3 and the enhanced .dng to Wetransfer, Dropbox, Google Drive, or similar free service and we can see what might be going wrong.

@ExUSA: "you can't click and rename in the grid view ... there is no way to simply click and rename (like both Windows and Mac UI)"

In Library Grid or People view, you can rename a file with the same number of clicks as in Mac Finder. See these two screen recordings for a comparison:

Ok its a bit tricky because I'm posting from work and the computer having the issue is at home. But see below for a screenshot and XMP taken directly from the dng file. It DOES have the original RAW filename in the XMP (near the end), just not being picked up by Lightroom. I reset application preferences and no change.

The XMP you posted has the field dng:OriginalRawFileName but not the field XMP:PreservedFileName, which is normally added by Photo > Enhance. It's the latter that the Rename token Preserved File Name reads.

To make further progress on understanding what's going wrong, I'd need the original raw and the DNG.

Yes I assume that Enhance is not writing the correct info. This happens with every RAW file that I try (I've tested this with numerous files), its not specific to any one. I'll put one online tonight that you can look at.

@ExUSA , I agree with @johnrellis, post see the screen capture from my Windows system. I am using LrC 14.2.

Note

Original file name (created when Denoise was done) P3054344-241-Enhanced-NR.dng.

I'm not changing filename and I'm exporting in place, not directly off the memory card. Maybe this is the issue? I have probably 350k RAW files so I hope that isn't it.

@ExUSA , you stated "I'm exporting in place, not directly off the memory card.".
Could you explain, I am not sure exactly what you mean?

I copy files off the memory card using the Finder, and then import them from my hard drive into my Lightroom catalog.

@ExUSA , Ok , so there are lots of users who use the Copy as DNG at import to LrC ( its an option Adobe have recommended for many years) the file is a raw DNG and users can apply the Denoise feature to the DNG image they will also get another image that will have the (-Enhanced-NR.dng. This new image will sit in the same folder as the RAW  DNG it's required since the Computer OS will not allow filed with the same name and will require a change to the name.

After you do Denoise you will have two Image files the Original file and a new Denoised image file.

I use the original CR2/CR3 (and some older ARW) files. I don't want to convert everything to DNG, only the files which I choose to retouch. I'm already using several terabytes of drive space.

Over 90 % of the images in my LrC Catalog are original RAW images from digital Cameras. I do not use DNG files in my normal workflow and I do not Automatically write Metadata to XMP.

I just used the Copy as DNG at import as a reason why Adobe does not retain the original raw image name in the DNG file created during the Denoise process. LrC does not change the original imported files when editing.
