P: Font sizes in UI are small and unreadable - we need to be able to resize with greater granularity

I’m writing about a problem I’ve encountered that seems to have a lot of people frustrated on the forums, but that Adobe apparently hasn’t done anything to address. This pertains to both LR Classic and PS 2002.

I use LR Classic CC and Photoshop 2022 on a new Macbook Pro (OS 12.1, M1 max chip), connected to an external monitor with a resolution of 2560 x 1440. The problem is that the fonts in the drop-down menus (and to a lesser extent, on the panel labels) are spidery and difficult to read, and there’s no way to adjust them or make them larger and clearer. From what I’ve read on the forums, this problem is even worse for those who have upgraded to 4K monitors.

The usual solution (and the only one offered by tech support) is to use the Mac’s system preferences to change the monitor display settings to a lower resolution. This isn’t a workable solution because external monitors don’t work well when they’re not at their optimal resolution. If you try to scale them to something other than the default setting, you lose sharpness. I’m a professional photographer and I can’t work on a blurry monitor.

In the “preferences / interface” panel of LR, there are options to make fonts larger, but these have no visible effect on drop-down menu fonts (and in fact I still don’t know what they actually adjust). Some responses on the forums suggest that people think these DO affect those fonts, but they’re mistaken. Whether the efficacy of those settings is affected by monitor resolution, I don’t know—but it shouldn’t be.

What's really needed—and will be even more important as people transition to 4K monitors—is the ability for the user to adjust font size and sharpness in the panels and menus without rescaling the monitor resolution. This should be well within the technical capabilities of the Adobe programming team. It could simply be part of the "preferences" panel -- an option for "Font sizes in drop-down menus" and another for "Font sizes in panel labels." It may require some collaboration between your engineers and those at Apple, but I assume there’s precedent for that.

With all the griping about this problem on the forums—complaints that go back years, mind you—it’s hard to understand why nothing’s been done about it. I’d appreciate it (and so would a lot of other people) if you could look into this and come up with a fix.

Thanks.

Is it possible to allow fonts  to be user scalable, or at least to add a font size between Medium and 150%.  As my eyes change, I find that Medium is too small, and 150% is too large.

One of the problems is that Mac OS X does not do the interface scaling on 2560 x 1440 external monitors such as this that it can do on built-in displays and 4k or higher monitors. There you don't actually change the resolution but you change the interface scaling. If Mac OS X enabled this option for QHD/2560x1440 monitors and offer the "larger text" and "more space" options, this problem would be gone. There is however a hack called betterdummy (read here: https://www.macworld.com/article/549493/how-to-m1-mac-1440p-display-hidpi-retina-scaling.html ) download here: https://github.com/waydabber/BetterDummy

Perhaps this can help you here.

The ideal (but not free) solution is to get SwitchRes X (https://www.madrau.com). This utility allows you to set your monitors to a huge number of different resolutions, including lots of HiDPI settings. I have two 4K monitors connected to my 16" MacBook Pro M1 Max and I can get crisp and clear menus at any size I want.

I have a vision problem.  I need to increase the text size in the panels and menus.  Changing it in the Windows 11 settings does not translate into LR.

What is the resolution of the monitor? I don't believe there is a way to change the font in the menus other than what you have already tried.

Changing the text size is very confusing in Windows and in LR -- a bit of a mess.

1. Right-click the desktop and select Display Settings:

johnrellis_0-1651173888060.png

Make sure Display Resolution is set to the Recommend value (the native resolution of your display).  Close Settings.

2. In the Windows search box, type "make text bigger" to get to these settings:

johnrellis_1-1651174153892.png

Set the Make Text Bigger slider to 100%.

To change the size of the menu bar at the top of LR (File, Edit, Library, Photo, etc.) select a different percentage in the Make Everything Bigger box.  Otherwise leave it at 100%.

3. To change the size of all text in LR except the menu bar, go to Preferences > Interface and change Font Size to a different size:

johnrellis_2-1651174377131.png

Beware that LR has lots of glitches when you set Windows Make Everything Bigger to other than 100% or LR Font Size to other than Automatic.

I'm in Windows 10, using the latest Lightroom Classic. When I change the Font Size in Preferences / Interface / Panels, the Small and Medium options are the same. When I change to Large 150% it increases the size but is a bit too much for my taste.

Ok I just fixed this manually by editing the "Lightroom Classic CC 7 Preferences.agprefs" setting the "AgPanel_baseFontSize" value to "scale125". Hope this is helpful to someone until Adobe fixes this in 2028.

All Modules: Accessibility issue. Need ability to increase text size.

Help those with reader s (glasses) and other accessibility issues

Library Module: When renameing folders, collections and sets, need to be able to right click as as keywords does. Descrease a step to right click

Keywords: Hierachy copied over had sub keywords with zero. Need to move up on leve and from under current keywird. Get an error message.

In Library, allow histogram slider to be moved. I should not need to go back to developer module to correct one or two exposutre levels. This will reduce edit time and help workflow.

Library Module: Meed "Collapse All" and ability to heep the layout as it has been sleected. Searches and other issues can cause heiracrchy to expand then need to manually collapse every set.

Hello Adobe LRC devs,

Could you please build a 'custom' option to set within... 'Interface: font size scaling'  or at the very least include a 175% option.

I've got an Eizo ColorEdge CS2740 ...perfect for professional photo editing & retouching. It has a 4K UHD resolution of (3840 x 2160).

I set my OS to 150% scaling... but I find the default setting within LR Classic at 150% a touch too small to read while editing, but setting it to 200% is way too big.

A setting in the middle - 175% or being able to set a custom value would be brilliant.

I'm sure I'm not alone on this idea.

Thanks for your consideration.

I got something in between by manually editing the "Lightroom Classic CC 7 Preferences.agprefs" file in notepad and manually setting the panel font size to 125%; i.e., - setting AgPanel_baseFontSize = "scale125". It may be scalabl in smaller increments by using numbers between 100 and 125. Note that the editing needs to be done when Lightroom is not running.

Hello,

I can't change the size of the police.

When I go in preference/interface/ police size/ I have the choice between large and little (by default), when I change the size, the police do not change after I restart LR.

An idea?

Thank you.

I think you mean 'Font' Size' rather than 'Police'. If I'm correct, then there are two Font Size options - Small (default) and Large, and changing from one size to the other also requires that you relaunch LrC. Even then, the difference between the two sizes may not be obvious.

As I wrote above, the difference between 'Large' and 'Small' is far from obvious. However, as below screenshot comparing the two sizes shows, the actual size difference of text is small but the overall affect to the UI is much more obvious. (i.e notice how the individual panels shift in alignment).

This Q&A by Tim Grey makes the same observation as I do above https://asktimgrey.com/2022/08/17/text-size-in-lightroom-classic/

"After changing this setting you’ll need to quit and restart Lightroom Classic for the change to take effect. Unfortunately, the Large setting for Font Size has a relatively modest impact on the text size within Lightroom Classic."

As you say, this a very very modest impact. On your exemple there is a tiny difference in the texte of interface and no change in the "changing text" (caption, keywords). And for me no difference in both types of texte. But thank you for your help and the link who show the the more efficient but not perfect is changing the screen resolution.

On higher-resolution Mac displays, you can scale text and graphics while still retaining all the pixels for photos:

Hi Rikk

I can reproduce it, please see below. I restarted LR after each change, using the ‘restart lightroom classic’ option in the preference set-up.

I came across this issue after upgrading my monitor to one which supports 2560x1440.  I am running Windows 10, with the windows display set to 256x1440 and the windows text size set to 125%

Having searched a couple to LR forums, today, others have reported the same issues.

Is there a trick or set-up which have missed?

Is there any other info that I can provide for you?

What’s the criteria for revering it to a ‘bug’ ?

Cheers

Bryn

You haven't provided much information on how/where you're changing fonts. If it's the same issue as being reported in below linked thread from yesterday, then there is a difference between the font sizes but it's not immediately obvious. The scresnshots I included demonstrate this.

The only font options I have available on my Mac version of LrC are 'Large' and 'Small'. Therefore, I have no way of determining where the extended list of options your screenshot shows are coming from.
