Is there a way to auto-import into a collection?

No, and Yes !

The Auto Import Dialog does not give you the option of creating a Collection at the same time as the image goes into a designated Auto-import destination folder.

BUT- you can make a Smart Collection that looks at the Auto-import destination folder and it will automatically update to show all images that arrive in the Destination folder.
