Cannot update or reinstall Lightroom

My version of Lightroom, 6.9 on Mac (macOS 10.12 and now 10.13), wouldn't update with the built-in check for updates mechanism, saying for a long while that there were no new versions. After finding that they were, I entered a world of pain.

Trying to update told me that the application manager needed to update, but that kept crashing. Digging through various forum posts, and after seeing error U44M1P7, it seemed that uninstalling and reinstalling would be what is required. Uninstall didn't go well, with the uninstaller stalling at 83% with "1 minute to go" for at least half an hour, so I had to force-quit that. Downloading the full installer and running it, it simply crashes, with the following issue (which looks much like the AAM crash, I think):

Exception Type:    EXC_BAD_INSTRUCTION (SIGILL)

When it crashed, it told me that the log might help, but the log file just has a link to System Requirements, which my system meets (MacBook Pro late 2013, 16 GB memory).

What is my next step in trying to get things going?

Finally, success! I downloaded the 6.13 patch, and installed it. Having firewall and Little Snitch disabled probably contributed to some of the success, but I finally got there.

Some steps forward, but some steps backward.

I have been able to get LR 6.0 installed and running, but now I cannot update. The Adobe CC application from the menu bar and the Adobe Application Manager both give me no updates to LR6, but only offer a paid upgrade to Lightroom Classic CC.

Is there a way to get the update to 6.x? Ideally, I'd like to get to 6.13, but even 6.9, which I used to have, would be an improvement over 6.0!

Solutions so far were using chat with support, but they won't help me to do this update, directing me back to the forums.

I suggest to run the CC cleaner tool: Use the CC Cleaner Tool for installation issues

After that, download the 6.0 base installer and the 6.13 update directly from here: Download Photoshop Lightroom

    Always reboot between every step.

No joy with this. I was able to download and use the CC Cleaner Tool. I rebooted, tried the installer again, and it failed with a similar message. I tried booting in Safe Mode, and the same problem:

Something seems to be wrong with launching a subsidiary process, as though something was no longer mounted or something.

    Any clues?

This looks like a clue to me, but I'm not expert in these error logs:

    Application Specific Information:

*** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: 'launch path not accessible'

It seems to be a permissions issue. When did you update to High Sierra?  I haven't had the problem myself, but there are reports of OS updates changing file/folder permissions. I would check that. It's a wild guess on my part.
