Question

Export Keywords, show synonyms

Dear all

I use the latest Lightroom Classic CC. I have two questions regarding keywording:

1. Is there any possibility to show synonyms of keywords? I use english keywords for birds and the scientific names as synonyms. If i search for scientific names, the photographs are found. But I would like to see the scientific name somewhere. The only way I know is to navigate to the keyword and open the window you use to actually define the synonyms. Since my keyword list is huge, this is not conveniant.

2. Is there a possibility to export the keywords to excel, but only the ones which are actually in use? Or is there even a possibility to open the catalog with another tool to access all the data?

Thanks for your help.

Regards

They show in the Will Export view in the Keywording panel, but not anywhere else.

Metadata > Export Keyword List lets you create a text which Excel can open. And if you are careful, you can import a list modified in Excel too.

    Thanks for your answer.

    1) I found that tiny little box, which shows all keywords which are exported. Not quite what I would have liked. I use a huge bird list from IOC for keywording of birds. The list is hierarchical including families etc. There is so much information in the export view, but because it is not hierarchical, its pretty useless for me. I don‘t know which words are synonyms for the different keywords...

Is there no possibility to show keywords as overlay, as it is possible with other metadata such as focal length, shutter speed etc?

    2. I can export the keywords that way, but then, ALL keywords are exportet to a txt file. Again, as I use a predefined keyword list for birds containing thousands of keywords, it is useless for me to export all keyords. I only need the ones, which are actually used in a certain group of selected pictures.

Any other way of export? Maybe 3rd party tools?

That's the limit of how much LR can display keywords and synonyms. It's not enough for some like you, probably me too, but it's more than enough for the big majority of users.

Not many people export keywords as text, so I can understand why Adobe have made it a simple all or nothing. If someone is smart enough to get data into Excel, they're probably smart enough to quickly find and delete the rows they don't want. You can then work on the section you need to change, and import that.

It would be  possible for someone to write a plugin to export part of the keyword list or to develop a plugin to manage the list without exporting. I have thought about the area a few times but I always struggle to identify a single routine task that enough people want to do in the same way. So you don't have too many options - but you do have more options than LR's competitors, past and present.
