Ihave just updated my Lighroom 5 to Lightroom 6 in order to be able to work with cr3 raw file made by a new canon M50.
But, even LR 6 is not able to load cr3 files. How can I update?
Thank you
The Canon M50 is supported by Lr 7.3 or higher, Lr CC 1.3 or higher and Camera Raw 10.3. Your choice is to update to one or more of these or convert your image to DNG using the free DNG converter application Digital Negative (DNG), Adobe DNG Converter | Adobe Photoshop CC

Unfortunately, that model is not and will not be sported in any version or update of Lightroom 6. Your only alternative if you want to continue using Lightroom 6 will be to download the free DNG converter (latest version) and convert the raw files to the DNG format and then import those into Lightroom. The DNG conversion process in Lightroom will only convert raw files that it already supports, so that option isn't available either.

Dear Jim, thank you very much.
I was not aware of this when purchasing LR 6 today. It seems to me that Adobe does everything to get rid of their customers. For me, it is questionable to entire into an agreement forcing me to pay monthly to Adobe until life end monthly...

You can convert to DNG and still use Lr6

I wonder why Adobe makes the free DNG Converter available. Seems contrary to that policy.

Personally, I don't believe this is a situation of Adobe forcing anything. Adobe is offering Lightroom as a perpetually updated software program. Those who want that type of service may "choose" to subscribe to the service. If it isn't something that appeals to you then don't subscribe. It's that simple. Adobe provides a free DNG converter that is updated as often as Lightroom and Camera Raw is updated. So you always have access to something that will provide access to the latest raw files even if the requires conversion to a standardized file format. Seems to me that Adobe is being extremely accommodating.

Dear Jim, yes you are right:
the dng converter is a feasible detour working but creating a certain inconvienience as compared to the sitution before.

In my opinion (and I stress that it's my opinion) it's no different than deciding whether or not to purchase a new car that has a backup camera and collision protection and lane change protection and all the new safety features. The new vehicles have all the features that my car doesn't have. It's MY choice whether or not I want all the new features. The car company isn't going to force me to purchase the new car. Adobe isn't going to force you to subscribe to their perpetually upgraded software. You don't have to have to all the new features. New cars wear out and have to be replaced. One never purchases a car expecting to never purchase one again, And if one leases a car they know they will be leasing again in the future. There are certain services that are ongoing, I consider my Adobe software to be one of those services. If you don't, that's fine. I suppose it's all in the way we perceive things. Some people are disappointed with Adobe and their decision on their marketing. But it has been very successful. If it doesn't work for you that is truly unfortunate.

Dear Jim,
thank you for your essay on percieved value of products.
The value of the LR 6 I purchased this weekend as an update for LR 5 turned
out to be zero as it does not support my Canon M50 raw files. I have been
using LR 5 since 2014 when I purchased a Canon 5D Mark III.
As the 5D Mark III wil be my main camera for the time being an update to
one of the CC versions has only limited value. Especially when considering
the massive price increase. Up to now I was purchasing a new LR version
every 4 years when using a new camera. This was about 20 € / year. Now -
with Adobe`s new pricing concept - I would have to pay about 144 € / year.
Which is a 7fold increase. I have never purchased a new car 7fold more
expensive than the predecessor.
Maybe that I end up purchasing the CC product later but at this time my
frustration is high and the percieved value does not justify this increase.
Yes, the Adobe products are good and I can well understand that Adobe makes
a lot of money. But the pricing strategy (I think pricing strategy is more
applying than "marketing concept") is too agressive for me.

Christian,
Separating 'true' value from 'perceived' value is never easy, especially when factors such as customer reticence to the subscription model is also considered. As such, and assuming Lr5 with the free DNG converter addresses your needs, then you should contact customer services and ask for a refund on Lr6.

I agree with you fully. Unfortunately, the general response from most adobe fanboys/girls is that if you dont like the product, dont buy it. "Its that simple", they say.
Yes, Adobe wants to push us into subscriptions, so you can pay them indefinitely, rather than a one time payment. I am very happy with my Lr6. I bought it when i got my 7D MK II, to be rid of the subscription plan of Lr CC.
With my new Canon M50 I am back to square one.
It IS a shame Adobe wants to drive us away, but they have, and theres not much to do about it.

Adobe is in the business of writing and SELLING software.
Canon is in the business of designing, manufacturing and selling cameras and other photographic gear.
You didn't have to buy a new camera.
If you had been using an older version of Phase One's Capture One software that older versions wouldn't of supported your newer camera either and Phase one would not of come out with an update for that older version to support that newer camera. You would of had to BUY the newer version of Capture One.
You gripe about Adobe not supporting your newer camera in an older version of LR but Adobe actually give away, FREE, a piece of software that will convert the RAW files from your newer camera into DNG files that can be imported into your older version of LR.
So stop the griping and download the FREE DNG converter program.
