P: Olympus fills in 'Description' field on export

Upon doing an Export to Hard Drive, if the image has an empty Caption field, then the exported file is filled in with camera info.  Specifically, (my photos are taken with an Olympus camera) the exported description will contain, "OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA".  This driving me nuts since if the files are uploaded in other simple applications like even FB, then that will show up in the title.  I've searched my computer files for templates, I've checked my presets, and I've searched forums and can't find an answer to how I prevent this.

While this has just started to happen, I have had this problem for quite some time if I edit in Photoshop directly from lightroom.  When the file is then saved from Photoshop, that same info is then stored and visible in the "Caption" field.  This new issue however, happens with the "Caption" field is empty and the file is exported to a jpg on my hard drive.  The resulting jpg has that phrase in the "Description" field in the metadata.

I am using LrC 9.4 on a Windows machine.

Help please?!

"Does the new metadata feature in LrC 11 assist in any way?"

I don't think so -- I had tested this in LR 11 and got the same bad results.

I can confirm that there's such bug and it's still not fixed. The caption field seems epmty in Lightroom but in exported file there's a "OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA" caption.

This bug has been present in some form since at least LR 3, though it appears the symptoms may have been morphing over that time.  I filed a new report and consolidated the old ones:

https://feedback.photoshop.com/conversations/lightroom-classic/lightroom-cant-clear-caption-in-jpeg-exported-from-master-imported-with-a-caption/6081b0693b0a051eac336d5e

Please add your constructive opinion to the bug report, and be sure to click Like and Follow at the bottom of the first post. That will make it a little more likely that Adobe will prioritize a fix, and you'll be notified when the bug's status changes. Product developers rarely participate in this forum and won't see your feedback here.

For JPEG masters, the workaround is to clear the caption in the Metadata panel (or with an Import preset) and then do Metadata > Save Metadata To File (or set the option Catalog Settings > Metadata > Automatically Write Changes To XMP).

For raws, the only known workaround in LR 10.2 is to use Exiftool or some other app to clear the caption before you import the file:

exiftool -exif:imagedescription= file.orf

Also, reviewing sample images from dpreview.com, it appears that in the last year or two or three, Olympus has finally stopped adding "OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA" to the captions!

I've also been having this problem, I think since the most recent Lightroom update (to version 10).
I was already using a metadata preset to remove the "OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA" caption from the metadata on importing into Lightroom (as previously suggested) in order to overcome the problem of this being automatically added to the image description when then exporting to Flickr etc. This was previously working fine but not any more. Now, since the update, any exports from Lightroom have this caption even though it is still being removed from the original on import as before.
I don't know what the solution is to this - other than clearing the caption field manually every time (which is a pain) - but I would like to know.

Olympus has long stored "OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA" in the caption field, annoying thousands of its customers.  Because of how various apps follow (or don't follow) the standards, that string could end up in three different metadata fields: EXIF:ImageDescription, XMP:Description, and IPTC:Caption-Abstract (LR reads and writes all three fields when you change Caption in the Metadata panel).

For your existing photos, you can use the Library Filter bar to search for:

Caption Contains Words olympus digital camera

Select all the photos, go to the Metadata panel, and clear the Caption field.

For photos that you import going forward, create an import metadata preset that clears the Caption field.
