Question

Lightroom Classic CC causing Mac to sleep on exporting files

Version 7.2

I've been having some issues with LR for a few weeks. Not sure it's tied into the latest update or not. I've reinstalled but the issue is still there.

When I'm exporting RAW files to one of my presets my Mac just goes to sleep. Pressing the 'enter' key wakes the Mac and it carries on exporting.

I have all my power settings set to 'never turn off'

I've tried a reinstall

I've set up a new user account and moved the RAW files into a new catalogue and tried from there.

I've also run  CPU and GPU stress tests to see if there's an issue but they run without a flaw. I've run my CPU's maxed out for a while with no issues.

This doesn't happen with other apps - video rendering and exporting in Final cut does not give me this random sleeping.

Anyone got any ideas? I can only think it's a bug in LR. I did look at activity monitor and it was showing me at one point 700% in the CPU column. Does exporting really put this much strain on the processors? Even more than working with 4k video?

Any help welcomed!

I have the same issue. I do not have hot corners set up in the system prefs. I specifically set sleep to "Never". I need to export 400-600 raw files to jpeg to a backup disk (external).

I want to do this while I go to lunch, sleep, answer phone calls or SOMETHING ELSE just to be productive. But, I have to baby sit the computer and tap something so it doesn't go to sleep. And guess what browsing the internet does? Hog bandwidth. So, I'm slowing myself down.

    Somebody have a suggestion?

Do you have multiple export presets? Does this only happen when you use a preset? Have you deleted and recreated the preset?

The random sleeping is probably automatic thermal protection for your mac. You shouldn't be able to stress the system that much but your Mac will automatically go to sleep if it starts overheating. You should check console.app and look at system log for what happens right before it goes to sleep and see if it gives any clues.

Good suggestion! The thermal issue seems the most likely culprit. It definitely goes into heavy duty fan mode right before sleeping. However, I do a lot of heavy duty video production, After Effects rendering, Lightroom batch exports, etc., and rarely if ever have this problem. That said, the computer has some miles on it, and after reading some other threads today noting the thermal issue and various causes, I am going to troubleshoot it with that angle in mind.

Well. i noticed the CPU was at 700% on import and export.

I ran a test to stress the CPUs and the macnine stayed on.

I ran a graphics card test for 30mins and the machine stayed on.  It can’t be a power issue.

I ended up going for a full osx install. I did a repair install previously but it made no difference.

I figured that if it was a trip to the Apple store the first thing they would do would be to do a full clean install and then test so I decided to do this myself.

I did a clean install of Bogh Sierra using a bootable USB stick. It appears to have sorted the issue.

even after the reinstall the machine still shows stupid high useage of the CPU at around 700% plus on import and export however the machine doesnt switch off anymore (yet).

I’d guess it was some rogue code somewhere- who knows!

I am having the exact same problem. I noticed it when I was trying to export a composition in After Effects using a RAW image sequence. I then tried opening the sequence in Lightroom to export to JPEG, thinking it was and AE/RAW problem, but it looks like it's an issue with exporting the RAW files themselves. Highly irritating, and has caused a major kink in my workflow on this project.

    Looking forward to an update.

A standard MacOS X setting is that if you move the cursor into the lower left corner, you activate sleep. Maybe that's what you do without realising it, because the Export button is pretty close to that corner?

    Err. No.

I have the top left set to sleep display as a hot corner. However it’s not that.

Export starts. Does a lot of files before the Mac sleeps. I don’t touch the mouse or keyboard during export.
