Question

Lightroom is really slow on the new best MacBook Pro 15inc

Helppp please,

I'm a event photographer and my old MacBook Pro (13inc late 2011 I7 8 Ram) was too slow when editing in Lightroom so I bought the newest  MacBook Pro 15inc I7 2.7 16 Ram but its still almost at the same speed of my old MacBook when using Lightroom and I don't understand what am I doing wrong, I changed once the MacBook it self cause I thought it may be a problem with only this MacBook but it didn't helped.

I started using 1:1 smart previews also didn't helped so much. I watched a lot of youtube videos of how to speed up Lightroom but nothing helped. I have 43000 photos on my catalog but also when I tried using a new catalog it didn't helped.

Every time I go to the next photo it takes time till it loaded then I'm pasting my preset and it also takes lots of time when I want to crop or change some settings its has like 1-3 seconds delay and I need to edit like that thousands of Raw's.

All the Raw's that I'm editing are stored on my MacBook's SSD.

What can be wrong?

I have the same issues.  Lightroom was never a problem but recently I have noticed it is lagging and it is nearly impossible to use brushes or spot removal.  dj_paige please if you are still here don't ask me any questions you don't seem to understand what you are speaking about and your tone above is questionable.

This post started in 2017. It may be more effective to start a new post with your particular system specs. I’m current on versions of Lr Classic and Mojave on my MacBook Pro and noticed this week that Lr is using 6 GB of RAM. If my laptop is connected to my 27” cinescreen Lr is crushingly slow and the laptop fan starts up when using the spot healing or adjustment brush tools. As soon as I disconnect the monitor, the fan goes off and performance improves.

If I connect to a Dell 24” monitor with a newer HDMI cable there isn’t a problem. The Thunderbolt display is older and connected via an adapter which is likely the cause in my setup that is contributing to less than optimal performance. There may be something diagnosable in your setup, please share the details of your setup.

    Hey all,

I had the same issue on my MBP 2017 15" with Lightroom Classic CC 2019 until I unchecked "Use Graphics Processor" option in the Performance tab of Preferences window. Hope this will help someone to resolve annoying interface lags

Hey, guys, I am having the same problem. Every time I load my raw files and I am in the develop screen and going through my photos it takes its sweet time.

    I have a MacBook Pro Touchbar 2017 -

Processor: 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7

    Memory: 16 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3

    Radeon Pro 555 2048 MB

Intel HD Graphics 630 1536 MB

I tried going to preferences > use graphics processor? should that box be checked or no? Because it was already checked and it was running rather slow. I unchecked it, I am hoping that solves my issue.

I just bought 2018 MacBook 13" with Core i7, 16GB and 512 GB SSD, thought of returning my just bought 2018 MacBook 13" Core i5, 8GB and 512 GB just to see any difference in processing speeds.

After comparing the two my conclusion (not solution) is:

Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator works fine on both machines while Adobe Lightroom Classic lags heavily, CPU is all the time on high temperature, running fans loudly. I already posted support enquiry and got no solution from Adobe.

I have a similar spec PC and I must say, Lightroom doesn't lag on the Windows platform. I do understand that in MacBooks the CPU's are for low-power use thus attenuating its speed, but it seems like the Lightroom on Mac is not optimized for new MacBooks and it doesn't take full advantage of all four cores. I might be wrong. Moreover, to add to my comment, Lightroom still doesn't have any touchbar support yet, while other Adobe products already have nice touchbar features.

I am just applying some presets on JPEG images shot at reduced megapixels using Nikon D7200 and the catalog with around 870 images only. Doesn't matter if your library is huge or small, Lightroom is sluggish in Develop module not in library module.

Many people report the same behavior in other threads. If anybody found any workaround to this problem, it would serve a larger community of photographers facing the similar issue.

    Most important:

Check this thread, where this dj_paige guy annoys everyone by just asking stupid non-sense questions and not providing relevant answers, he is just boosting his points by adding replies. I don't want any reply from this guy.

Hi, I have been experiencing this problem on my relatively new Mac Book Pro. Although the solution seems impossible, I seemed to have fixed it. Basically, mac os blocks many Lightroom support files, which results in slow and laggy performance. In order to fix this issue I contacted adobe support via call and got on the line with a support rep who screen shared with me and changed the Lightroom support files to utilize the performance of your CPU, correctly. I highly recommend this method considering it was fast and simple. I do not recommend going into the system files and changing it on your own though. You'd  rather just speak with someone who knows what they are doing. Try this and let me know if it helps! Also, when you launch Lightroom, go to Lightroom(in the top left), click Catalog Settings<File Handling< and change the PPI to around 1000-2500ppi and change the preview quality to "Medium."

Same problem here.. new MacBook Pro touch and really running slow when editing.

Spothealing is almost impossible without a crazy amount of lag.

I'm using a 2.9GHz MacBook Pro Touch with 1TB internal SSD and 16GB of ram, and having no issue with lag.  Can you provide  additional information such as the camera model and any other edits applied to the images in advance of Spot Heal.

    WORRY!!

What is indicated here re Lightroom "slow" on a new MacBook is most concerning.

I wrote much more previousl, but it seems to have been 'lost' & doesn't 'show'.

So writing this basically to check.

It's frustrating that there is no one size fits all answer here. There are a few things that will contribute to slowing down your mac or pc when you are in Lightroom.

    1. How many applications are open at the same time

    2. How much spare disk space you have

    3. Having the GPU processor checked (or unchecked)

    4. Whether you are using smart previews instead of originals for editing

    5. What your camera raw cache settings are and where they are stored

    6. Corrupted files

The list goes on... Can you go into preferences > performance > system settings and paste them here?

Take a look at Adobe's KB article too in case there is some information here you haven't seen yet:

    hi.

someone using a computer for the first time would thank you for those suggestions....unfortunately for all the rest of us, the issues are way beyond that.

There "is" an actual "ISSUE" with the Lightroom CC and a "Please restart your computer" is kindergarten language.

When using Lightroom 5 or even the Pre-subscription version of CC, there are no issues and it all runs smoothly.

Not sure how a $65b company was not able to harness the power of the top end macbook 2017 and the like, and is consistently frustrating us with every new update.

    lost cause.

What size (in pixels) is your monitor?

What size (in pixels or megapixels) are your original photos?

Are you doing a lot of brushing and/or a lot of spot healing?

Is the catalog file and previews on an SSD?

When you go to the next photo and the loading is slow, are you talking about the Library Module or the Develop module or both or neither or something else?

    My monitor is 2880 x 1800

    My photos 6016 x 4016

no brushing and spot healing at all

Catalog and previews are on SSD

I'm talking about the Develop module there I'm working on them

Thanks in advance for your help!

So now tell me about your hardware in the computer ... what is the exact CPU, what is the GPU (if you have one), how much memory?

Also, have you tried changing the setting on the GPU acceleration (go to Preferences, click on the Performance tab, and then change the setting of "Use Graphics Processor")?
