LR Classic very slow to boot (then performs normally)

Hi everyone, firstly thanks in advance for any help.

I have Lightroom Classic, on the latest version. Running on a late 2013 Imac 27" which has 16GB of RAM.

I am a photographer and use my Mac for pretty much only LR/PS and the odd web browsing.

I store my photos on an external USB drive which my current one is only 1.2TB used out of 4TB.

My Mac is only using 400GB of its internal 1TB fusion drive.

Recently my LR can take 5minutes+ to fully start up and allow my photos to appear in library/development. Once it has finally loaded everything it is quick and snappy to use and navigate around. This only occurs on the first startup after booting up, if I "Quit Lightroom Classic' and then open it again its quick to load.

FYI the rest of my Mac is quick on startup, I can be browsing Safari listening to Spotify within seconds.

A browse of the net has made me try a few things to no avail.

- Delete time machine snapshots in terminal

- Boot up in safe mode

- Restart and reset NVRAM

I have also unboxed a brand new external drive, copied my photos onto it but it is still the same (I wondered whether the older drive was on its way out)

The LogiOptions plugin is known to cause long startup times.

Go to File > Plugin manager and disable it.

Then restart Lightroom.

I have the same issue.

- after starting LRC it waits for 5 minutes until it opens

- after that it behaves normally

- on MacOS Ventura

- independent from which VR catalog is used (small or large)

- the problem appeared after i tried to connect one LR catalog to the adobe cloud to sync down images from the cloud into the LRC catalog. That worked in the first place but became slower and slower with more images (RAW) in the cloud. I went back to a catalog backup before I had it connected to the Adobe cloud. But since then LRC takes it's 5 minute wait until it opens

- absolutely not acceptable for a professional software

PS: during the 5 minute startup time the process says "Lightroom Classic (not responding)" and it uses exactly 100 % cpu, which means it uses one cpu core

its very typical, I am having the same issue, I believe it is because Adobe are trying to load files from their cloud system, I specifically downloaded classic so not to have this issue with having to have an internet connection and having to preview every file I have ever worked on in Adobe. I just want a stand alone system that loads up quickly.

if that can help someone : I keep my computer running all the time and for some reasons, Lightroom does not like it. Starting the app can take up to 2 minutes. Trying File / Import Photos takes about 1 minute just to get to the next window.

Once I reboot, it takes about 15 seconds to open the app instead.

Well, I have tried all the newest solutions. None made any difference. I finally decided to try the Create New Catalog, and only bring in One folder of my photos. It is still loading in 40 seconds. Which is faster than the 48 - 50 seconds my full catalog loads in. I also unchecked my Video card, and a few other things, like removing Collections as well. I tried everything to make this tiny catalog run fast. Nuts. I really believe, when I bough my new ThreadRipper, with 128 GB Ram, Quad channel, using M.2 drives, there is a problem with using this techknowledgely and LR. My older AMD 8350 chip, with 32 GB RAM was much, much faster. BUT - I will say, all my Topaz filters happen in 3 - 10 seconds. And photoshop seems better. Maybe it is just LR not being able to run well with Threadripper. I have not tried shutting down 8 cores,(16 threads) yet. Maybe that is next.

I also have LR now starting extremely slow once I upgraded to my new ThreadRipper 2950x, with 128 GB RAM, and a eVGA RTX 2080 Super. Using super fast M.2 1TB drives for my OS and Adobe files and cache. Crazy. My old AMD 8350 with 32 GB and eVGA 960 was faster with my SSD drives. I wonder what is going on as well. It used to take 16 seconds to boot up LR version 8.*, but now version 9.2.1, it takes more than 60 seconds. Then only works so so. Moving from photo to photo, even with 1:1 previews being built on import, it still takes 2 seconds to see the photo in full clearity.

I am running Lightroom 5.7.1 on a new computer. I built the computer from scratch because I was forced to go to Windows 10 and my older computer was not a good choice to update. I never had any problems opening Lightroom on the old computer. On the new one, Lightroom would open in 6 seconds right after booting Windows 10. The next day, Lightroom would open in 18 seconds. At the end of that day, it would require 28 seconds, and the problem got progressively worse each day, if the computer wasn't rebooted. Since it was a new computer, I checked out every forum I could find on Lightroom, Windows 10, Drivers, Drives, Bios, Cloud Backup, Antivirus, and nothing helped. The Task Manager didn't show any memory, processor, or drive problems, or other overloads while this was happening.

I started checking things that could be running in the background which could cause daily degradation. At least for my computer, I found the problem and it fixes it 100%. It is very easy and won't take but a few minutes of your time to find out if it helps you.

On your Windows desktop, right click and select Personalize. On the Settings window that opens, click on the Background tab on the left side of the window. On the Background drop-down selector in the middle of the screen, change it from Slideshow to Picture and select the still picture of your choice. (If your background was already set to Picture, then my fix won't work.) Close the window, close any open programs, and restart Windows 10. If my fix works for you, that's all you need to do. I have tried many promising fixes in the past only to be disappointed, so I hope this fix is worth your time!

I'm having the same issue as well...VERY frustrating. Takes 10min to start up and then everything seems normal after that. My main catalog is stored on a local SSD with Files on external USB, but I have a similar issue with another catalog where everything is on the local SSD.

OS: Windows 10

I've actually have the same problem: both LR Classic and Photoshop 2020 take too long to load, but once they load, they perform fine. I've timed them: both take 2 plus minutes to load before they become operational. I've tried turning off my

NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2 GB graphics engine, but there was no noticeable speeding up of the loading. I use a 2015 MBP with 16 GB memory and 1 TB solid state drive. The problem arose with Catalina and more recent updates of Adobe PS and LR. It's an irritant but not a deal breaker for me. I hope you can fix it.

One more thing PS 2018 loads without a hitch. So, it's something between 2018 version and 2020 that created the problem.

I just add an info: during the long boot CPU consumed by LR is less than 3% and GPU is 0 (nothing else running except standard services). So the LR process seems really to wait for some event that does not occur.

I also have this issue and I don't see any work from Adobe to address this problem.

I already spent several hours on the web support and the problem was confirmed and was to be escalated.

Who knows what that means and when it would be addressed.

One way that I found to accelerate LR startup is to open task manager and play around going from one process to another with the mouse.

That is not a typical experience with Lightroom and it does sound frustrating, as Lightroom is booting up at a slow speed. Could you please try optimizing the performance of Lightroom and let us know if it helps? Optimize Lightroom performance

Have you tried turning off the GPU option from Lightroom's preferences?
Go to Lightroom > Preferences > Performance tab > Uncheck "Use Graphics Processor" > Restart Lightroom.

Also, could you please let us know the exact version of Lightroom you're using by going to Help > System Info?
