Merge duplicate person tags (tagged faces) in Lightroom Classic CC

As I could not find a solution for my problem in this forum, I think it might be helpful to share how to merge duplicate person tags:

I had many duplicate person tags, because (a) I keep them all sorted under "tagged faces" by default and (b) when importing images with person tags they would appear on the top level of the keyword hierarchy.

As a result, the same name would appear both on the top level and under "tagged faces". But I want them all to appear under "tagged faces", and I want them to be unique.

My solution:

  1. Rename top-level name tag by adding some text, e.g. "John Doe2".
  2. Click on the arrow behind the top-level person tag to show all images with this tag.
  3. Switch to Persons view and look for the "John Doe2" tile.
  4. Delete the added "2" on the name shown in the tile: now Lightroom correctly assigns that person to "Tagged Faces > John Doe".

Hope this helps.
