Problem importing CR2 (RAW) files

So all of a sudden, Lightroom won't import my CR2 files. I have JPEG and CR2 files on my memory card from different days. The older CR2 files were being recognized, but the newer ones weren't. "WTF?" I said to my self. After searching the internet, I thought maybe I needed to update ACR and the DNG converter, so I downloaded the converter update, ran it, and now Lightroom won't recognize any CR2 files. Neither will Photoshop. At least not directly from the camera. I can import them using the Canon EOS Utility and then Lightroom and Photoshop will recognize the CR2 files. I'm running the most recent version of Lightroom CC Classic 7.4, Camera RAW 10.4 and shooting with a Canon EOS 70D. So, I say to you, community of experts, WTF?

The older CR2 files were being recognized, but the newer ones weren't.
The newer ones weren't recognized? What does that mean? What do you see on your screen (describe in detail) that indicates the files were not recognized.
Are the newer ones on the same memory card as the older ones?

Everything is on the same memory card. What I mean by not recognized is that they do not appear. Like at all. I think this is a Windows problem since when I go to the camera using Windows Explorer, there is just an icon with no file name except for one or two of the older CR2 files. I've reached out to Canon to see if they have a fix, because Microsoft offers no support regarding Camera RAW. All in all, this is extremely frustrating because none of this makes any sense.

And I have no idea what changed, but now Lightroom is recognizing and importing CR2 files. Windows still doesn't recognize the file type, but I don't care about that.
If anyone stumbles across this and wants to know what I did to magically have it all start working again here are the things I updated. Adobe Camera RAW, DNG Converter and Canon Digital Photo Professional for my model of camera.
It's days like today that I miss film.

Thank you jone66990255 for posting about the DNG converter - this worked!! I JUST bought adobe Lightroom (working on a budget) and now I don't want to pay a monthly fee - just so I can edit my pictures.... I get the CC version has more features, but let me get my money's worth from Adobe Lightroom 6 first, right? THANK YOU!!!
Some of these people come off super rude! Look - if you're annoyed that we're not all "pros" at this, do us all a favor and let someone else answer our questions - hopefully with some tact.

If you are connecting the camera to the computer, try using a card reader instead.
You will be much happier in the long run using a card reader.

I have the same exact issue. I can go through my Canon software to FINALLY get my CR2 files but why am I paying a monthly fee to go around the bend and down the street when I use to just have to open the door?
anyone have a solution?

Did you try the suggestion above by ManiacJoe?

I did and, wonder of wonders, it worked with plugging the card directly into the computer. Seems like Adobe has a problem with their interface through the USB and camera raw.

If you're using Lightroom then you cannot blame Camera Raw because Lightroom does not use the Camera Raw plug-in. It isn't part of Lightroom. Lightroom only states the version of Camera Raw required for FULL compatibility with Photoshop.

i cannot get LR to import the CR2 files after changing cameras. Was Canon 5DM2 now Canon 5dM4
have lots of CR2 in LR from first camera
now none import, "the files are not recognized by the raw format support in Lightroom"
am using a card reader
have restored the preferences, did not change anything
shoot jpg&raw and the jpg import fine

You have to have at least Lightroom 6.7 to directly import 5DM4 files. What version of Lightroom are you using.

Please specify the exact version of Lightroom installed. Indicating the "latest" version simply won't cut it. We need to know the exact version number.

Surely must be time you updated LR?
There has been about 23 updates (that is TWENTY-THREE) since CC2015.01 was released.
You need a minimum of CC2015.7 for the 5DMK4 camera, so why not update to Classic v7.5?
Note limitations for 5DMK4- Working with Canon Dual Pixel raw CR2 files in Camera Raw and Lightroom

how annoying. Guess my auto update with adobe is failing me. I shall investigate that. I have only been using lightroom for about 5 months, frustrating trying to figure out how to manage these version issues ....
23 sounds like a lot
I am new to this adobe land and kind of assumed when I signed on it would give me the most recent versions/updates ...? not so?

The Adobe Creative Cloud Desktop App is your gateway to all updates for Adobe software.
You should allow it to run, either at computer 'start up', or by opening occasionally.

I THINK that CC2015 version is actually Lightroom 6.0 so you need to update to a newer version. If you are paying for the Creative Cloud why are you not running Lightroom Classic CC.

There is no need for you to double-post the exact same question. Further, you need to start your own thread on this, and explain the problem from the beginning.
