I have this problem.

System freeze during import and DNG conversion

Ver. Lightroom Classic: 8.1 [ 1200465 ]
Lic.: Creative Cloud
OS: Windows 10 - Business Edition
Ver.: 10.0.17134

Use DNG converter stand alone and normally the conversion is successful. Normally but not always.

To read the SD card, use the reader located on the Dell monitor. The photos are raw from Canon 6d MkII.

Oh, just to eliminate an odd bad hunch.

If you import from the SD card, BUT, you select copy (not the DNG option) does it also fail???

I had a similar problem last week, Import would just go into a Not Responding state. After trying the usual cures, I used a method that I had used before, Create a new catalog, and then import everything from your existing catalog into the new one. That left behind stuff that LR 8.1 didnt like, and it now works fine.

You stated the SD card reader was in the Dell Monitor. Does that mean it is actually part of the monitor, or does that mean it is connected to a USB port on the Monitor?

Try connecting it to an actual USB port on the computer.

I tried with another SD card reader mounted in the chasis of the PC connected directly to the motherboard

And have you tried the following standard processes in Lightroom failure what if's (I have struck thru ones that are not applicable)

1) Cold reboot PC . Actually turn the PC off, turn it back on (not a warm restart, but a cold boot)

2) Check for updates to Lightroom (done)

3) Check OS for updates (careful, some updates might hose things up) (looks like your's is)

4) Check your GPU driver for updates (As previously stated yours does not appear to be)

5) In Lightroom Preferences turn off using the GPU, see what happens

6) Reset (aka restore) the Preferences file. (carefully review these links)

Recover catalog and images after resetting preferences in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom

7) Disable Plug-ins (one at a time) (no, none of yours are the normal suspects)

8) Windows OS should use DirectX not OpenGL, MAC OS should use Metal

9) Rule out a corrupt catalog, make a new catalog and see if issues go away

10) Try a clean user account. Make a new user account on your PC and try it.

Lets ask a few more questions. But, I agree this is probably a Hardware issue.

1. Speaking of your import steps, are you importing from:

1a) The SD card plugged into a card reader connected to the PC

1b) The SD card still in the camera, camera connected to PC via USB

1c) Copying the images from the SD card onto a hard disk, then importing from the hard disk

and if 1a) have you tried 1c)

And if 1b) Do not do that

Reason to test this out:

If you are failing at 1a) but 1c) works, then an issue with SD card.

If you are currently using and  failing the very undesirable method 1b) (slow, undependable) and 1a) or 1C) works, then a possible USB cable issue

Now as to failure using 1c) that depends upon when it fails. When copying using the OS, or after that, when importing in Lightroom.

a) Cold Reboot = ok

b) SD Card Importing (2 different card reader) (No DNG conversion) = freezing

c) Direct Camera Importing with cable (No DNG conversion) 25 photo = freezing during 23

d) Copy in HD & Importing = ok

e) Copy in HD, Importing & DNG Conversion = ok

Results: 2 sd Card reader & one USB Cable are corrupted????

So, probably not the SD card, same USB cable for both readers and when via camera?

Try another USB cable

One warning on USB cables available in stores, some are meant for charging only, they do not have all required wires, not meant for data. Some are just crap. Also, some might have wires for charging and wire(s) for data to the device they might not have wires for data from a device.

The only thing that I see in your system information that should be addressed is your GPU driver version, it appears to be about 3 moths out of date. This is not your issue however.

Please clarify what you mean by "system freeze". Is it:

  • the computer itself crashes and has to be re-started
  • Lightroom stops, but everything else on the computer works
  • none of the above (please provide more details)

    Hi, I try to better describe the problem

    When importing raw files Lightroom freezes during conversion to DNG.

    Lightroom can be reduced only with task manager.

    The system is unstable and a restart is required.

    Please try switch off the GPU support from the Lightroom preferences and check if that helps to fix the issue

    Go to Lightroom > Preferences > Performance tab > Uncheck "Use Graphics Processor" > Restart Lightroom.
