What's Your External Hard Drive Setup?

Do you currently store your library on an external hard drive and have LR Classic CC mapped to that directory so that you don't have the photos locally? I'm looking to get specific feedback on configurations. I just got a new iMac and equipped it with a 1TB SSD. At the moment, I have my photos locally and have LR Classic CC mapped to the folder path. As you can imagine, it's very fast and smooth operating. I'm considering getting an external hard drive, or two. For the purpose of backing up my entire computer and moving my photo library off my workstation. For the most part, the options are to go with a USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 interface. Additionally, a 5400 RPM or 7200 RPM hard drive. I know both USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 are fast, and that Thunderbolt 3 is even faster, but might I experience some lag editing using a drive that's connected via USB-C?

I have all my photos on a second internal drive. On my previous computer, the photos were on an external HD, 7200rpm. No problems at all.

I do not recommend putting photos on an SSD, it's very expensive real estate, and putting photos on the SSD speeds up nothing, except by a trivial amount that you will never notice. Whatever speed you are experiencing is not because the photos are on the SSD.

No! Speed of the disk and speed of the connection to the photos has no effect on editing speed.

Thank you. Just looking to hear from people on what this part of their workflow consists of and why.

I import all my photos through Lightroom onto an EHD - G-Drive USB-C 7200RPM.  I keep my working catalog on the Internal Drive but make backups to the EHD.  I have a 2nd EHD which is a clone of the 1st EHD as a backup of the photos and of the backup catalog.  I use SuperDuper software on a Mac to keep the clone up to date.  As stated by dj, there is no lag in editing with this setup.
