Best backup strategy for cloud based Lightroom CC

Dear Community, dear Adobe,

what is the best backup strategy for the new cloud based Lightroom CC?

If I use the option "store a copy of all originals" and then backup every night

- all originals

- the Lightroom CC folder i.e. package on my MAC (presumably including the database with my edits)

would  I then be able to restore

- a batch of accidently deleted pictures with edits?

- the complete cloud environment in case of a catastrophic event?

I think proper backups of pictures and edits is such an essential feature that one has to wonder why it was not there from the beginning. Compare with Classic Lightroom which does a periodic local backup of its database as default.

Best regards

Markus

I agree with Jim. It would be useful if images deleted from the cloud could be available for restoration for 30 days like Apple’s iCloud.

I usually make a manual copy of every photo right after import. So at least I have the original, even if the editing work is accidentally deleted with the cloud version.

For that reason I don’t use the preference to store a copy locally as I can always get one on the fly for local editing. The default cache for me is much more efficient than storing every local copy as it is cleared dynamically from time to time.

In theory, the only thing you'd need your own backups for would be to protect against user error, specifically deleting images from the cloud unintentionally. There is not yet a "cloud trash can", so any deletions are permanent. Even using the "store a copy of all originals" option is no guarantee of safety because those local originals are still managed by LRCC....so if you delete an image from the cloud, the local copy becomes eligible for deletion as well. That might not happen immediately, but there's no guarantee it'll still be there by the time you realise your mistake. So in the absence of a cloud trash can, a separate backup of your images would be sensible.

There's little point in backing up the local library, if that get's wiped out by your local "catastrophic event", simply starting LRCC again will recreate it from the cloud.

LR Classic has the option for catalog backup (not image backup), but that still has to be actioned by the user, there's nothing automatic about it.

    Jim,

thanks for your answer, but i think you got me wrong.

First, I know that "store a copy of all originals" option is no guarantee, because LRCC sync would delete these images too. That is why I would backup these local copies every night. So if they are deleted by LRCC I still have these images in my backup. But I would not have my edits.

Thats why I want to backup the LRCC database, because it contains my edits. I want to replace the cloud version of the LRCC database with my backup in case of a catastrophic event. I want to restore the cloud, not my local PC.

    Best regards
