Bought lightroom CC, trying to migrate lightroom 4.4 catalog - how how how???

I bought Lightroom CC ($9.99 USD version).  I've been using Lightroom 4.4 (yes, I'm slow to upgrade).

When I try to use Migrate catalog in LightroomCC, it says it can't do it.

I've searched blogs and forums, and best i can tell, i need to upgrade to lightroom 6 catalog first before migrating the catalog to lightroom CC.  But how do I do that?  I can't find a link to a trial version of lightroom 6, or even a link to purchase lightroom 6.  Can anybody give me precise/complete steps to go from lightroom 4.4 to lightroom CC?

PS - I've got 20+ web pages open, each one from a search/blog/forum, each one supposedly offering help to migrate, but the links only take me to Adobe Lightroom CC purchase page.  I've got that.

Help please.  and thanks!!!

Download LR6 from here: Download Photoshop Lightroom

It will install as a seven day trial allowing you to upgrade your catalog and then migrate to CC.

Ok - the link worked.  I'd been to that page, but incorrectly dowloaded the "patch" version of version 6.  The page is a bit confusing, with the link for Adobe Lightroom 6 not being underlined or blue colored, but the patches are.  Dumb me for not noticing the un-intuitive.

Couple notes to anyone following these bread crumbs of migrating from pre-Lightroom 6 up to Lightroom Classic CC:

First, there is HUGE difference in the names - Lightroom CC uses some new fangled (useless for most of us???) cloud storage (which can't be turned off without huge manual efforts).  Lightroom Classic CC (note the "Classic" in the name) is upgrade of what you are used to using.

Yes, use link above, get Lightroom 6 and install.  Upgrade catalog to version 6.  Then, get Lightroom CC (which includes Lightroom Classic CC) and install (yes, it's $10 a month or so - but don't get the extra storage in the cloud - total waste, in my opinion).  Once Lightroom CC installed, then you get option to install Lightroom Classic CC.  That's most likely what you really want.  The non-classic version dumps stuff to the cloud, and seems reasonable at $10 a month - but it'll handle only 1 small SD card of photos - like who only has a that few?  And there's apparently no way to turn off sync to the cloud.  So don't go there unless you have some specific need to sync some small few # of photos to your cell or tablet.  Otherwise, stick with Lightroom Classic CC - it's the desktop version of what you are used to using.

Good luck!

Some notes to make stuff clearer that you still mix up in your post:

  • Lightroom Classic CC (aka LR7): Desktop-centric LR as we know it since version 1, originals are stored locally.
  • Lightroom CC: Cloud-centric LR, originals are stored in the cloud.
  • If you want to have LR Classic CC there's no need to install LR CC.
  • If you want to work with LR CC, you need the cloud space because all your originals will go to the cloud.
  • The basic photography plan that includes LR Classic CC, LR CC and Photoshop has only limited cloud space (20GB) to sync Smart previews to mobiles and web as it was available before the release of LR CC.
  • If you want to work with LR CC you need the more expensive extended photography plan (1TB) or the LR CC plan (1TB) which in turn does not include the Classic version nor Photoshop.
