Question

Cloud Lightroom, is it worth it?

CAn't try it  without all the hassle of going win10.  I am a texture artist for games and not interested in AI image editing, at least till it's a special neural network based texture generating soft like Artomatix.   Still I am doing thousands and thousands of photos for 3d reconstruction (photogrammetry), have a huge collection of  image assets   and in general stuck upon everyday problem of finding something in my old assets: image references for something, a special detail hidden somewhere on some psd layer etc.

Asset management and tagging is a tyresome task on its own so I wonder what new Lightroom could offer in that field? Read somewhere it does auto tagging with AI.

So  would appreciative if someone could share on those topics

1. How good this tagging really is?

2  How much would it be for all the terabytes of psd files and photos keeping them in a cloud?  Is it necessary ?

3. Could I have an access to 3d paty images ( a company I am doing work for for example)?

4.  Could it find anything specific inside psd files layers?

5. Can it find images resembling a specific image intelligently?

Thanks guys for your opinions.  To bad it doesn’t work on my Windows version at all.  Modern neural networks do wonders  and I hoped it might be something of such.   Looks like I should continue to do things old way  so far.

Lr CC is less than a year old and while the feature set has seen steady gains over recent months I'm not aware of anything on the tagging front that would lend itself to some of the requirements you've mentioned. For example, how would it find 'special detail hidden somewhere on some psd layer' when it doesn't support layered files unless they also includes a composite preview (Lr Classic isn't any better in this regard).

The Adobe Sensei Keywording works reasonably well although it’s not perfect. It is supplemented by your own keywords but the system requires a network connection to work e.g. all information is stored server-side and not on your local computer. I guess patterns and layer identification could be possible in the future depending on available data sets for machine learning, but not yet. I gave a brief description in my blog last December, when Adobe introduced the update “Auto” button for editing images, based on wide data sets from professional photographers.

The basic Lightroom CC plan provides 1 TB of cloud storage. You would have to pay extra for additional cloud storage. Based on your description of your needs, I don't think Lightroom CC will fill your needs. Cloud performance is not stellar for many. My concern is that, for the type of work you are doing, Lightroom CC would be extremely frustrating. Others might have a different perspective.
