OK, I'm not well versed on this.  All I find in my system info is Intel UHD Graphics 750. I don't even know where to look for the driver info - sorry.  Computer is less than 2 years old however....

Open LightRoom; click Help > System Info..., paste the contents here.

(But with that said, "Intel UHD Graphics 750" is likely to be woefully underpowered for Lr's AI functions, from what I can find out about it.)

//EDIT//NOTE//

For those members looking at this Discussion. In my reply below, the pertinent part turned out to be how the monitor is connected to the computer. Apparently missing or no GPU.

Graphics Processor Info: DirectX: Intel(R) UHD Graphics 750 (31.0.101.4502)
Graphics Processor Detail: loaded: Yes, supported: Yes, compute: Yes, init: I3_GPU3, hard: success, soft: success, al: No, dl: No

Hmm, memory for GPU not listed.

Ok, that particular controller is perhaps a Integrated Video Controller? As opposed to an actual Discrete

GPU? And has no memory of it's own?

If so, then LrC does not support it for AI and other advanced features that use the GPU.

Model XPS 8940

But is that computer a Desktop as opposed to a Laptop? Does it perhaps have a separate GPU card installed?

Link below specs for that PC (I think) looks like a proper discrete GPU should exist.:

https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-us/xps-8940-desktop/xps-8940-setup-and-specifications/gpu%E2...

INQUIRY/REQUEST

Can you in Lr, bring up your preferences, and look at the performance tab, and post a screenshot of that? Should look something like:

3.png

Ohhh.....

A Odd THOUGHT

How is your monitor connected to your computer? Specifically what port on the back of the computer is it connected to?? A port on the GPU card? Or a video port off the motherboard?

OK. This is intersting.....First:  This is a desktop, not laptop.  Dell tells me that the existing GPU board is descrete - but I am questioning that.  Looking at the computer back, the only monitor connections (I have two) are on the motherboard, based on your picture and mark ups. I do not see any connections on a GPU board, or any pci boards at all.  This has got to be an issue, I am thinking....See picture:

IMG_20231107_123129204 (002).jpg

Screenshot as you requested (If I got the right one):

Screenshot 2023-11-07 123313.jpg

Now, since I started this inquiry, I found info from Dell on compatible GPU cards. It is at: https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-us/xps-8940-desktop/xps-8940-setup-and-specifications/gpu%E2...

Please tell me if I'm getting this wrong - but I think that I need to find the right card and install it.

Adobe's minimum and recommended specs are here:  https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-cc/system-requirements.html

Where do I go from here?  And thank you SO much for the help

Where did you get that computer from?

When?

Did it include a manual?

Because the GPU is clearly not installed. (if it came with one)

I think that at Dell, you can lookup your specific computer based on serial number (ahh, a service tag, should be on a printed label) and see exactly what you got, at links to manuals, drivers, etc.

Bought at Costco - no manual.  And it came just as you see.  Only monitor connections are the ones shown which, if I am looking at your picture right, are on the motherboard, not a GPU card?   I can look up the machine at Dell and it just lists that  Intel UHD 750. I'm reading that this is an integrated, not separate graphics card.   Trying now to figure out which card to order..... and if I can just plug one in or if I have to do something else with the existing UHD750, like disable it or something......

Some of those GPU's in that list (the link you posted) are a bit old. But if you are going to visit a computer store, those old ones are probably not available anyhow.

I cannot address ADM GPU's as I have none, I have no clue as to what is new vs old vs very old. But you may want to notice all the issues AMD owners are having with LrC in these community pages (all though mostly MACOS issues, and that used to be a NVIDIA situation)

As for NVIDIA an RTX 3000 series is not too old, and RTX 4000 series would be (usually) the newest in the store. HOWEVER, NVIDIA has a nasty habit of fouling up the 3060/4060 models, I would avoid those (google it).

  • Big issue in selecting that GPU is VRAM, at least 8GB, more if you cam. You cannot add VRAM later.
  • Another issue with the newer cards is how many slots are required. This is mostly an issue with the cooling fan assemblies attached. Pay attention to that. In your picture, none of your slots are being used. Space not so much of an issue. BUT (next bullit).
  • A huge concern is the particular slot the GPU needs to go in, not all the slots on a computer are equal. Looking on-line it appears your computer has One PCIe x16, One PCIe x1 , and One PCIe x4  slot, tyically a GPU needs that PCIe x16 slot. Your manual will tell you about that.
  • The newest GPU's, especially the largest, may have special power requirements. A specific cable, and specific total Power Supply issue.
  • SOmewhere at ADOBE is some GPU reccomendations/

I'm seeing both 3000 and 4000 series options at BestBuy and Amazon.  But I'm cautious about going with anything not on the Dell list - maybe over cautious? But I know the power supply is an issue which is why I'm thinking I should stay with the listed models.  I dont see any mention of second slots needed, or other cables. Thinking I'll get 12 GB even though the recommended specs are less.  Cant hurt, right?

I should clarify, the cards sit in one slot, but the components of the cards can occupy more that one slot of space. Depends on the model. That Dell recommendation probably takes that into account. (especially as it appears no slots are occupied)

And a Power Supply Calculator (on-line) will help determine if that Power Supply will be enough

Geez you are a wealth of information - thank you!  I ordered the 3060 online before I fully read your caution about the 3060/4060 models.  I will google it and maybe need to cancel - but it was the only 12 GB option on the Dell list - I'd like the larger but I expect 8 GB would be OK as well if there is a problem wiht the 3060s as you say.  Thoughts?

Good to know about the slots - I assumed they were all the same! As for power supply, I am also assuming that the ones listed are OK there.   I have more research to do - again thank you so much for your help.  Next I will be asking for recommendations for 27 inch monitors.

Might be more of an issue for Gamers than Creative users.

But I have not read more past a few articles complaining about them, so I did not go past that. Probably a Review article or two..

Ah, perhaps a change in my idea 306/4060 avoid., you went for the 12GB option, looks like the naysayers were crying about the 8 GB option, THe 12 GB they are happy with. And the issue is with gamers and about performance in games.

That makes me feel a lot better - thanks.  I just opened my tower up. Interestingly, I only see one PCI slot in there.  I"m accustomed to several, but OK.  I have the card coming on Thursday and will see what happens!  Thanks again.

Any suggestions on a decent/reasonable 27 inch monitor to plug into this (pair)?

Their might be variants on the MB in that Desktop, but searched Google for an image, and here is one:

GoldingD_0-1699457110060.jpeg

That Blue slot is the one you would use for a GPU.

Note that newer and newer Motherboards are coming with fewer and fewer slots, Standard might be 3 currently, they are putting a lot more devices/chips on the motherboard hence customers adding fewer cards, and some of those devices need resources the additional cards would eat up. Dual ethernet, WiFi, M.2 PCIe drive "slots", Advanced Sound, Newer and more USB. Everyone needs a GPU slot, some might need a slot for fancy drive add-ins. But sound, Ethernet, WiFi , not so much (well some Motherboards might not come with a WiFi)

Oh, and that Dell is a Mini Tower? Yep, a smaller MB, so less room for slots.

Yes, that's what my mothersboard looks like.  One blue slot.

Now my concern is this:  I opened the case that the power supply has only a 6 pin connector.  That card is 8 pin, as best I can tell from the pics.  Seller says I can use a 6 to 8 pin adapter, which I have ordered, but my power supply is 500 watt and Im trying to get an answer from Nvidia whether that is adequate - I have read some statements that is it not, but just on Amazon questions.  I'm concerned about damaging something.  Will keep trying to connect with Nvidia

In one of the above replies a link to one of the various Power Supply Calculators was included. That one from EggHead. Others exist, both from Power Supply company's, and Hardware Sellers, might be one at Dell, might be some at GPU Mfg's.

The pin for additional power can differ from mfg to mfg, and their may be variants. What make/model, A NVIDIA RTX 3060 12 GB from say Gigabyte may be different from say MSI. And not sure if it is one 8 pin, or two 6 pin (12 pin total in that case)

Oh, and this GPU does not have one of those new power pin issues, just the normal many years old power cable.

Arggg... I tried the Newegg calculator and it didn't work for Nvidia or MSI (what I ordered is MSI)  I'll try the others - but it may be a moot point now -  Because I looked at the PS in my machine and, while Dell listed it as 500 Watt, it actually says Max Output Power 360 W, unless I'm reading it wrong. I don't think thats even close to enough for this.  Looking online I can find a 500w replacement but no larger in the same shape/form factor to fit where mine is now.  I don't know where to go from here... .thanks for listening/helping!
