Question

Exporting on iPad mini 6 issue

Exporting an image with decreased resolution or for example a border is killing LR. Rendering Dialog is visible and afterwards there is no Progress during "Exporting". Just saving to device is properly working.

Hi @Fabian35180963nstv - that sounds frustrating. You've tested this on any number of images, I assume, and had the same issue... A few questions that might dig into the issue:

- In terms of your setup, are you purely using Lightroom cloud on mobile and desktop, or are you using Lightroom Classic on the desktop syncing into the cloud (so you'd largely access smart previews on your iPad)? When you're in the edit screen for an image that definitely gives you issues, tap on the cloud icon—what does it say for Local vs. Cloud Backup?

- In terms of export settings: Can you share what image format type(s) you're exporting from that you've tried? It might also be helpful to know what you're exporting to and the settings there. I know that if the border export is also a problem, there aren't really any options in that dialog for file format/size—it's always a jpg AFAIK. So, the export dialog format might not be relevant. Still, it'd be good to know if there are direct export formats you have/haven't tried.

- I know you said "Share to Device" works properly... what about "Share" in the same menu dropdown? It's more or less the same overall flow as "Export," but with fewer options.

And, just confirm the iPadOS and Lightroom mobile versions?

Hi,

Thank you for your answer.

I am just using LR on iPad. Raws (RAF) are local and export format is JPG. I've tried out files from the cloud but it did just work out one time. Same problem afterwards. Even after downloading the original RAW.

I thought of problems with the iPadOS file management. So I've changed the file name, but I can't get rid of the problem.

Export settings: JPG 100%, width 2480px for online publication

OK - I've downloaded a few RAF files to try to test a few scenarios with here, and played with a few import and export tests. Haven't had any issues myself, but it's obviously a limited selection that I didn't shoot. I just want to double-check a few things. Let me know if I'm wrong on any of these—and again, sorry to have so many specific questions, but I just want to be sure I understand so I can see if I can reproduce or think where there might be an issue. And then, I've got some ideas of things to test to see if other changes might make it work, just to narrow down the issue.

My understanding - are these correct?

- You add images to the Lightroom library from "Add photos" (menu from upper right corner, 3 dots, "add photos" at the bottom of that menu). You have imported photos from the Files option - both "iCloud Drive" and "On My iPad." Both of those import options have the same issue. My general suspicion is that the import method is not an issue, although it's possible that something to do with how they then sync to the cloud might be.

- You are only choosing "Export as..." or "Add border and Share" from the Share menu that includes "Save copy to device." The "save copy to device" option does successfuly render the photos, and saves them rendered photos the Apple Photos library.

A couple more questions/ideas:

- Have you tried "Share" from that overall Share menu? It's right below "Save copy to device." You've only explicitly mentioned the other three: "Save copy to device," "Add border and share," and "Export as." "Share" still lets you have the JPG export option and resize (tap the little sliders icon to the right of it in the dropdown menu first to choose options). Once it (hopefully) renders, you can choose to put them back in iPadOS local files or on iCloud files just like with Export.

- I'm sure you aren't doing this, but, just to double-check: Are you using Lens Blur or an AI mask on any/all of these? I assume not, but I and others have seen massive slowdowns particularly for images with lens blur on mobile export in the most recent mobile update.

- How long have you given it once it gets "stuck" rendering? On reports of slowdowns on mobile exports, again what I've seen myself (specifically with lens blur), it will seem stuck, but it's actually just taking forever—try giving it, say, 15 minutes and see if there's any progress. (It's not OK behavior, but, "stuck" is ultimately different from "glacially slow.")

Can you try/have you tried (just for troubleshooting purposes, I know these aren't what you want in the end):

- Try exporting to a 2048px TIF instead of jpg using the "Export as" process—see if the different format has the same issue as the JPGs.

- When exporting to a resized JPG, try: (1) turning off metadata for Camera & Camera Raw info; (2) using a different color space instead of whatever you're currently using (I assume you're using sRGB); and (3) a different quality % than 100%.

Are you using a built-in Camera profile, or are you changing to an Adobe profile? If you're using a Camera profile, try an Adobe profile and see if that makes a difference.

- Try indicating that the files should be saved for local storage in an album. Sounds silly,, because you've already imported them locally, but I saw this worked for one person, so I'd give it a try. If you're not familiar: (1) Make an album and drop in a couple of problematic files that you had imported directly onto the iPad from iPadOS Files. (2) Go to App Settings (upper right, three dots menu) > Cloud Storage and Sync. There, turn off "only download smart previews" for now, if it's not already off. (3) Then, back to the album: tapping on the three dots next to the album in the left column, choose "Store Locally." It'll show a brief progress bar, and then show a blue arrow indicating it's stored locally. (4) Once that's done, try exporting one of the photos in that album—any change?

Those are all the ideas/directions to explore that come to mind. It is particularly strange to me that "save copy to device" works but "export" doesn't, especially as the issue is in the rendering stage—which should theoretically be the same no matter whether you're choosing "Export" or "Save copy to device." But at this point I can't think of why that might be.
