Question

Getting files from iPhone to PC quickly

This might be a silly question.

If I shoot on my iPhone, or import from SD card to iPhone I can look at images and edit them on LR mobile and they can slowly go up into the cloud. I shoot RAW so files are sizeable. This is particularly useful for rating images on the fly.

I can get them off my phone to a USB stick easily.

I can also wait until I am home and go to my PC and wait for the files to synchronise and download.

My question is essentially if I can speed up things by putting the files off the USB stick where they would end up when they eventually downloaded to save a bit of time and bandwidth.

I do want them in the cloud but just want them on the PC faster if I can achieve that.

At the moment, I can't think of any other workflow than what you are currently doing.

If your PC is a small laptop then you could take this with you and use this as the Cloud import location (which Lightroom are you running on your PC by the way? Lightroom of Lightroom Classic?)

Also, if your Phone has enough storage you could import all your photos and pause sync until you get to a location with a speedy wifi.

One option maybe to save as a DNG. Pause syncing and import photos. Then after doing your work in Lightroom Mobile you can export a DNG back to the USB stick, deleting the RAW from Lightroom Mobile.

Then, when back at the PC import the DNG into Lightroom (note, Classic will only upload lower res Smart Previews).

@selondon yes that's much as I figured too.

I'm shooting DNG on the iPhone. Whether I am away from home or I am at home on WiFi it takes ages to upload them to the cloud and then back down to my PC (which isn't a small thing - it's a tower so I can't take it with me).

In the meantime via the iPhone camera reader I can stick a USB stick in and get them to my PC quite fast.

My thought is that if I actually have phone and PC next to one another why wait for upload/download to happen when I could simply plug a USB in and put them over to the computer from the phone in minutes.

If I'm on holiday, for example, I can rank and rate the images quickly, maybe edit one or two, but the transfer still takes ages.

I know where they will end up on my PC. I was thinking I could simply put the DNG files in place so that when Lightroom Classic sees that it has a file to download it thinks, "oh, that's already there I don't actually need to download it... synchronisation is complete."
