Question

Importing photos results in both a jpg and nef photo in Lightroom

when importing Lightroom is importing both a jpg and nef file.  As a result I have two files for each picture.  Is there  a setting that needs to be changed.  In deleting duplicates is it better to delete the jpg or nef photo.  thank you

Thank you for the suggestions.  I have changed the camera settings.  I did not notice this issue with the desktop version.  Recently converted to the cloud version so still learning the differences.

Lightroom Classic gives you an option (in the preferences) to import both the raw and the jpeg as separate photos, or to consider the jpeg as a 'sidecar' file of the raw and not show it. The default is the second option. Lightroom 'cloudy' does not have that choice, it always shows both.

    Hi Wally,

To add to what Johan has suggested, a raw files gives you more flexibility over editing an image, if given a choice then you should keep the raw file instead of the jpeg file.

Also, try changing the capture setting on your camera, it probably is set to capture Raw+Jpeg, it should only say NEF.

NEF files are raw files, so these files have much more room for editing. If you must delete one, then delete the jpeg version (and maybe stop shooting raw+jpeg).
