Laptop Upgrade for Better Lightroom Performance need suggestion.

Hello Everyone,

So I am a Photogrpaher(not a pro), I shoot nature photos. The laptop I use for photo editing is an Asus s551la.

Specification: Core i3 4010u processor 1.7 ghz speed.

Ram: 12 gb (Had 4gb I added another 8gb ddr3l stick)

Storage: Seagate HDD 1tb 5400rpm

Graphics: Intigrated intel 4400 hd graphics family

Now,I usually shoot JPEG. In my laptop lightroom is very slow specially from the version 6+ but after I added a 8gb RAM the performance is pretty good but still moving from one module to another module lightroom lags several seconds. The sliders sometimes lag too.

My question is I want to upgrade my laptop by adding an ssd. Will the ssd help to reduce the lag for moving from one module to another module? And like improve the overall performance of lightroom like the slider speed and the photo exporting speed? And also the filter rendering time in Photoshop?

Please reply I really need the best solution as I have no way I can buy a laptop now or a PC.

Thanks in advance.

Monzur

I just want it to run smoothly.I mean the application itself lags. The processing like applying a filter take time it's okay but the whole application takes time to start plus moving from one to anther module lags. Will adding an ssd fix it?

My opinion, adding the SSD is unlikely to improve performance all that much. Once the images are imported and in the catalog, the images are not accessed anymore. All the activity takes place in the catalog. You need a fast processor if you want good performance. If the SSD is replacing the hard drive in the laptop, and is the drive that will be holding the Lightroom program, then that would probably help improve performance somewhat. But that 1.7 GHz processor is still going to be a bottleneck, I'm afraid. If the SSD is going to be an external hard drive to hold your images, and Lightroom is going to stay on the existing hard drive, then it's doubtful that you will see any improvement in performance at all.

Thanks Jim.I am planning to install 500gb samsung 860 evo. I maybe can consider a 256 gb samsung 860 evo too but that depends on the market cost. But probably I will go for that 500gb.

Can't really comment about your presets. You might just want to take the time to rebuild some of them. I just wanted to say that since your clock speed is 1.7 GHz I don't think you can realistically expect that computer to ever really be a stellar performer when it comes to using Lightroom.

Hi Monzur,

Thanks for the detailed post. I'd recommend that you check out the suggestions mentioned in our Optimize Lightroom performance article and see if that makes the navigation speed better.

SSD would be a great upgrade but I'd also suggest you to consider upgrading your graphics card. See Lightroom Classic CC system requirements and Adobe Lightroom GPU Troubleshooting and FAQ

If you need specific device suggestions, I'd say create a new post on our Hardware Forum as the experts there can share their insights.

Regards,

Akash

Hi Akash thank you so much for your reply. Actually as I mentioned it's a laptop the gpu can not be upgraded and only the ram and the hard drive can be upgraded. As I already upgraded the ram I now has only one option, the HDD.

Hi Monzur, sorry that I missed that GPU cannot be upgraded. I'd try unchecking the option "use graphics processor" under the Preferences> Performance menu and see if that makes any difference while switching from one module to the other.
