Lightroom 7.0 produces "corrupted" AVIF files

The Oct 2023 update of Lightroom CC claims to support exporting to AVIF.

That's great! But the files produced are not usable by any applications outside of Adobe Photoshop.

It does not work in Firefox, Windows Photo Viewer. Firefox has had full support for AVIF for years. What's wrong with the AVIF file that Lightroom produces?

Attached is the offending AVIF file. No HDR, quality 100%, Display P3 color space.

Your own web forum doesn't allow me to upload avif files. Please, try and export an avif file on your own.

    The avif files I exported both on Lightroom CC on desktop and on mobile are somehow corrupted and not displaying on Windows gallery (with AV1 codec installed) and in any app on Android (gallery, instagram, messenger).

    There really only is support in Chrome for these files. The files are not corrupt those apps simply haven't been updated to fully support the AVIF format and especially HDR AVIF.

    So far my testing shows that only 8-bit AVIFs are working correcltly in Explorer and Photos via this extension https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9mvzqvxjbq9v?hl=en-US&gl=US

    As soon as you save as 10/12/16-bit - the file only opens in Chrome, like you mentioned. And that's a real bummer... 😒

      I found that i have to add export option to resize the image.

      If you don't use resize and enable HDR Output the files not opening on the Samsung S22.
      Without HDR output files displayed on S22. But Then HDR Output is enabled, you need to resize. From by brief tests it doesn't matter up or down. But seems it doesn't like pixel count from my R6mk2 or just resize fixing something. 

      The images I see on S22 gallery are perceptionally SDR. No bright colors. 

      I think LR is getting ready for HDR. Probem is there is no one care to implement displaying HDR.

        I Have the same issue. All the avif files exported from LR or PS are corrupted and won't open on any other software. Won't even upload on google photos. It's such a bummer. Could you find a solution to this?

          Google photos does not support AVIF. Very little currently does. Windows itself doesn't without a plugin for example. Mac OS support is very spotty. You can really only correctly display them in Chrome as a browser on both platforms but very few websites support it yet so you can really only really use it if you have complete control over your own webhosting. That said, facebook supports avif uploads (not clear if they support HDR avif - I need to try) but instagram doesn't so it is really a hit or miss situation. In Firefox you have to enable it in about:config but it is buggy and doesn't correctly display most files.

            Expoeted a bunch of avif files and they open fine in Firefox and in Apple preview. Strangely enough your exported avif file will not open in Firefox and gives an error but it does open in preview. It looks weird there because it appears to be a multipage image with small chunks of the image in the other pages. Not sure what is going on.

            If I understand you correctly, you are able to open the avif file posted by "Chester the LR Karen" with Apple Preview and Firefox on MacOS.  Most of the avif problems are on Windows 10/11. 

             

            On Windows, Firefox claims that the file is corrupted.  Here's the result of trying to open COS_0487_DXO.avif on Windows 11 23H2 with the latest Windows Firefox build.  This is the same result as the file that I generated on the latest version of ACR/Bridge.  

            Here's the result when the file is opened with Windows Photos (latest version) of both my file and COS_0487_DXO.avif:

            Here is the result when trying with Google Chrome:

            There is some problem with Windows (possible problem with the file format, but given that Apple products and Google Chrome can deal with it, it's most likely Windows). 

             

            However, I will retract my statement about my Samsung S20+5G.  It does display avif files.  There was another problem preventing it from displaying.  I was able to directly download this file and the one that I generated, both displayed correctly on the phone.  Here's a screenshot from the S20+5G of my avif file.

            Please? What are the settings? None of my pictures open on S22. But I am able to open your image of the building.


            Maybe problem with HDR? that need to be disabled?

            .... is no one else able to replicate this issue? It has happened with other RAW files in Lightroom Classic as well.

            -----------------------------I have a 5900X, an RTX 3090 and 128GB of RAM. Yet Lightroom chokes on a fricking 24MP photo.

              I have the same issue using Bridge and ACR.  When I export a RAW file (DNG or NEF) to AVIF, I find that it will not open in Windows 11, any application except Adobe applications, XnViewMP (HDR colors/tones sometimes not properly represented), and Chrome.  Windows Photos claims the files are corrupted along with Firefox.  I sent the files to my Samsung S20+ with Android 13, and they are not recognized there either.  I sent them to a friend who has a Google Pixel Pro (Android 13), and the AVIF file will not open.  My LG OLED TV will not recognized them either.  It doesn't matter whether it's HDR or SDR. 

               

              My friends with iPhones (latest versions) can open the ACR AVIF images.

               

              There are no options for high bit-depth compressed images that are universally supported, and the only universally support image format remains JPEG (8-bit, sRGB).  Perhaps a better bet would be to support HEIF since every device mentioned does support it (the phone even produce images in that format).  There needs to  be a universally support high-bit depth, compressed format.  AVIF is not living up to the promise.

               

              BTW, I can confirm that AVIF files cannot be attached to post in this forum.
