Lightroom CC Trial - will it work on iPad or not???

New Here ,
Oct 02, 2018 Oct 02, 2018

Started the trail of Lightroom CC today and got it set up and working fine on both my laptop and Android phone.  Question is, before I waste a bucket load of time trying to fathom it out, is it supposed to work on an iPad or not?

Confusingly in the App Store there's two apps 'Adobe Lightroom CC' and 'Adobe Lightroom CC for iPad'.  When I look at the first it tells me "This app requires specific features not available on this device" (not surprised with the complete PITA that Apple has become of late) and when I download the second one and log in it doesn't pick up my albums nor indeed any sign of the trial whatsoever.  When I select 'Cloud' it asks me to pay up for a subscription!

Just how many subscriptions am I gonna need!  Is it not the case that if I subscribe I should get the service across ALL devices or is it just phones and PC?  When I decide to pay (the not cheap) subscription am I then gonna get hit for further 'per device type' subscriptions (e.g. Oh sorry, iPad is extra).  If it's the latter, it's delete time and screw the subscription.  I don't mind paying for the service but I'm blowed if I'm gonna cough up more to get devices to work.

One of those should work on your iPad.

You only need one subscription. Maybe you aren't logged into your account and that's why you get the message, but Adobe do have a 30 day money back policy.

Classic is in the Photography plan (which also gives you Photoshop and LRCC), while you only get LRCC and more cloud space in the "Lightroom Plan" .

Thanks.  So if I'm using the Lightroom CC trial (which does come up on my computer and phone OK) I need Lightroom Classic?  I'm on an iPad Mini 4 running iOS 12 so I wouldn't have expected any hardware or OS issues.

Having just checked I'm trialling the Photography Plan so I guess I need LR Classic.  Bit confusing for sure.

Even more confused now as I can't even see Lightroom Classic on the App Store, only the two apps I listed, both of which are CC. Having just checked the Photography Plan again it says it includes:

Includes:

  • Lightroom CC
  • Lightroom Classic CC
  • Photoshop CC

Reading further (still tons to learn as I'm in the process of binning Apple entirely following the Aperture / Photos debacle) to a non system specific photograph suite, it looks like with the Photography Plan I can use Lightroom Classic CC AND Lightroom CC (I have a feeling there is a way to push the LRC CC to LR CC if you wish) as both are provided with the package BUT it seems that for the iPad the app is only compatible with the iPad Pro now (another reason to bin Apple, assuming that is, Lightroom CC WILL work with another Android Tablet).  So looks like I need a new tablet too (if I bother!).  Annoying about the iPad 4 Mini not working though.

I'll definitely be doing a LOT more research before I just hit the buy button.  As I say, I have Lightroom CC for iPad installed but it's picking up no subscription trial at all, but instead asks me to subscribe via iTunes, not something I wish to do seeing as I'm based in SE Asia and will be subscribing from here (I don't want to subscribe via iTunes then find that doesn't carry across to my laptop and Android phone app package.

You certainly don't want to subscribe via iTunes if you're thinking about taking out the Photography Plan subscription with Adobe. Maybe there's a problem with the trial aspects of using LRCC on iOS, but once you have a valid subscription you can use LRCC for iOS or Android on any number of supported mobile devices. I have it running on my iPad Mini 3 (iOS11), so the Mini 4 should be no issue at all. I also have it running on an older iPad retina running iOS10, though I expect that may become unsupported in time when/if iOS10 is dropped.

LR Classic is a desktop-only application (similar to Aperture), and is downloaded and installed via the Creative Cloud desktop application, as is the desktop version of LR CC and Photoshop....so none of these will appear in any App Store.

One version of the Photography Plan provides Classic, LRCC, Photoshop and 20gb of cloud space. The other version provides LRCC only, with 1tb of cloud space. Both plans allow the use of those mobile devices.

Thanks for that, I was kinda hoping it would would work.  Don't use the iPad enough to warrant buying another tablet (I certainly won't use it for editing) but at times it's handier than the laptop and saves hammering the phone battery.

I plan to subscribe but will do it direct with Adobe or maybe look at how the LRCC mobile app from the Play Store is supposed to be paid once the 30 day trial of that is over, that may just be a for a single app use rather than for the Photography Plan.  Once I get the full plan I'll set to work on sorting the iPad.  I'll contact Adobe if it still doesn't work.

Yes I definitely won't subscribe via iTunes.  I'm in the process of migrating from Apple so hence starting the switch from Aperture / Photos in readiness.  I'll likely use the plan with 20 GB of storage, I have over 60GB of old images but they are rarely accessed these days so I'll use the LR CC Classic to store those locally with a back up and just keep the current year, including everything I need to keep from using the phone in LRCC Mobile.  I was tempted with the 1TB plan but at double the cost to store all images in the cloud, images which I hardly ever access, isn't really justifiable.  Nice to have access to LRCC Classic for heavier editing if needed.  Now to start getting my head round the workflow and start on the dreaded task of importing to LR CC Classic and re-doing the folder / album structure   Also time to hit the tutorials page.

Must admit I'm really impressed with what I've seen so far, wish I'd switched earlier, that said the LR CC concept is quite new I think.  Excellent value to IMO vs the individual app / upgrade route of years ago.

Update: Aiyooooo.  Talk about dumb!!!!  Checked the LRCC for iPad app.  I was logged in (courtesy of key chain auto log in, trouble is it had logged me in with an email I presumably used to use for other Adobe apps.  Switched that to the correct email and now it's fine.  I'd checked before, not closely enough though and having seen the profile image which is in use on the trial email account (which is identical to the one used on the old email, the email address is almost identical too), assumed all is well.  Obviously not.

I need some help with this also. After spending almost all day with Adobe help, and Apple Help, I'm told my Nikon d4s will not work through Lightroom on an iPad mini.

What I want is to download selected images from my D4s while traveling, edit them and push them to my website for safekeeping, using Lightroom on an iPad mini. Is this possible?

Thanks

Alison

The Lightroom app (from the App Store) should work on an iPad mini. Install it and log into your account. You don't say how recent your iPad is, but the D4s has been supported for a long time and I see no reason why you shouldn't be able to import raw files using one of the Apple SD card readers.

Thanks but...

Installation went fine. The iPad is up to date, only a year old. The D4s needs a special cable to connect, which I got from Apple. Neither Lightroom, Photos nor the iPad sees the D4s. When I used the card reader, same result.

Apple says it's a Lightroom problem. Lightroom says its a Nikon Problem. Nikon won't answer me. I get error messages that the device is not compatible, sometimes and not other times.

Help?

Alison

It is expected that Lightroom would never see the D4s directly. Lightroom would need to import the files from iOS Photos, so you need to focus on getting the photos from the camera and into Photos.

Okay, just want to make crystal clear on how the subscriptions work:

If I sign up for the Lightroom 1 TB plan from Adobe, how many desktop licenses do I get?   Do I get a license to use the mobile versions as well on my iPad and iPhone?  If so, how many?

If I sign up for Lightroom 1 TB plan from Apple on my iPad, does that also give me a license to use the desktop version of Lightroom (not Classic, the cloud version) as well?  If so, how many licenses?

If I sign up for Lightroom through the Mac App store, does that give me a license to use the mobile apps?  How many desktop licenses does it allow?  Are the desktop licenses valid only on a Mac or could I use one on a Windows PC?

Thanks!
