Lightroom crashes on Windows

Community Beginner ,
Aug 11, 2025 Aug 11, 2025

I work with LR latest version on a Asus Vivobook Pro (Windows).

after hardly a minute the program crashes. Even only by scrolling through images in grid view (local).

after a minute it comes online again but it keeps on crashing.

I also have Bridge installed. Scrolling through images gives no problems. Was thinking Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 is root cause but crashing keeps happening even after shutting of GPU in LR settings.

Any ideas what causes this? have deleted and re-installed LR many times.

Thanks for adding the system info. I couldn't find crash reports submitted with the account you've signed in to the community with. If you see a crash dialogue, submit it with your Adobe ID. Check here for more steps: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/submit-crash-reports.html

Try these steps to get Lightroom to behave as expected:

In the System info you've shared, the drivers for the NVIDIA RTX 4060 Laptop GPU device are 32.0.15.5597, which can also be read as 555.97, which is slightly older. That may have caused the crash. The current version of Graphics drivers is 580.97 (12th August).

Please update to the latest version of GPU drivers from the Nvidia app and follow the troubleshooting steps here: https://adobe.ly/45yOliy

Let me know how it goes.

Thanks!

Dear @Sameer K,

thank you for your reply.
Link below doesn't work: message 404; page not found.
Reg. Nvidia driver: shortly before consulting Adobe I spoke with Asus Helpdesk. They advised me to install Nvidia drivers from their website. hadn't noticed it was dated.
before that I always installed latest driver from Nvidia website. And before last Monday I had latest driver version 580.97 installed. This never made a difference. Crash kept on going whatever driver version.
Crash reports: apparently LR doesn't save crash reports. However I filed many in the past after crashing.

Peter

Hi @Sameer K,

I just installed LR 8.5.
It crashes in local mode. Just scrolling through images in grid view already will cause crashing.
If it were a GPU problem: if I shut down GPU in LR preferences, then problem wouldn't occur would it?
I tried this already but this doesn't help. would that rule out GPU?

Thanks for sharing the updates. It helps. I've updated the link, and it should work now. Please use it to submit crash reports.

You can also use the Windows Event Viewer, go to Windows Logs > Application logs, and look for Error or critical failure logs there.

Are you browsing external drives, NAS, or cloud sync (OneDrive, GDrive, etc) associated folders in the Local View? Does it crash with a specific folder? If so, do any of those folders also have Videos among the images?

Awaiting hearing from you. Thanks!

Hi,

sorry for my late reply. I have done some testing.
The problem seems not to occur when I'm working in the cloud. Even with GPU enabled in LR preferences.
However when I switch to local and disable GPU I notice that LR is not working smoothly. LR is not freezing but it surely disrupts during editing.
When I come out editing and start scrolling through the images in grid view the problem gets worse.

Thanks for the details! Just out of curiosity, where are the local images saved? Are they on an external drive or your computer's local storage?

Thanks,
Nikunj

On the local harddrive.

I read something about making a scratch disk would help. What are your thoughts about this?

Hi @Photopetsch,

Sorry for the delayed follow-up, and thanks for clarifying that your files are stored on the local hard drive. Just to clarify, Lightroom CC (cloud-based desktop) doesn’t provide an option to assign a dedicated scratch disk like Photoshop does. What Lightroom CC does allow is:
ʉۢ Adjusting the cache size limit (Preferences > Cache).
ʉۢ Clearing the cache manually.
ʉۢ Choosing whether to store Smart Previews or Originals locally, and setting their storage location.

Since crashes are persisting, here are a few steps you can try:
ʉۢ Reset preferences (hold Shift + Option [Mac] / Shift + Alt [Win] while launching Lightroom, then confirm the reset).
ʉۢ Adjust the cache size, try both decreasing and increasing it to see which gives better stability.
ʉۢ Ensure your local/internal C: drive (default) has plenty of free space. Lightroom needs working headroom for previews, cache, and temp files. Running low on space can cause instability.

Let us know if these adjustments make a difference.

Best,

Anshul Saini
