Lightroom doesn't perform address lookup for GPS metadata

Community Beginner ,

Issue: Lightroom doesn't perform address lookup for GPS metadata, leaving location, city, and country fields empty.

Lightroom Version: 8.0

OS and Version: Windows 11

Steps to Reproduce the Behavior:

  1. Import photos into Lightroom that contain GPS metadata.
  2. Open the photo's metadata panel.
  3. Notice that location, city, and country fields remain empty despite the GPS data being present.

Expected Result: Lightroom should automatically perform an address lookup based on the GPS metadata and populate the location, city, and country fields, as Lightroom Classic does.

Actual Result: Lightroom does not perform any address lookup, and the location, city, and country fields remain empty.

Hi Rikk,

Thanks for trying to reproduce this! So are you saying that Lr is supposed to automatically fill in the Location information based on the photo's GPS metadata? Is there a way to manually trigger this?

There is no trigger. If the GPS information is valid and present, it should look like this immediately after import. Here is one of the test files I shot yesterday to test your report.

If you have a file with valid GPS data, it may fail.

If you can share a file that you believe should function, can you share it with me so I can try it?

Sure, here is one with valid GPS data but no Location information: L1004717.DNG

Using your file, I am seeing the information populate after a second or two:

Thanks for testing. I just noticed that this is only an issue on the Local tab. When importing the photo to the Cloud it updates Location Information, but when I import to a local folder it doesn't update the Location.

Local File - that makes sense. Some of the features are yet to be ported to the local tab. I will check with the devs but I think that is expected.
