Lightroom Freezing in synch on startup

I am running Photoshop Lightroom 6.0. When the pp opens a popup appears "Lightroom needs to do some housekeeping 69% complete this may take awhiloe. It has been stuck fir over 24 hours and The rest of the main window is blacked out, so I cant try any of the suggestions about filtering and looking for synching photos. I tried permanently deleting trash but that did not solve it. Ideas?
