LR Classic CC files stores in OneDrive

I am totally confused.

I moved/synced about 70Gb of images from my LR  Catalog to OneDrive with the purpose of freeing up some space on my MBPro. After ages of moving these files, I presumed that they would all be "in the cloud"and therefore NO LONGER on my Hard Drive. I can access them/see them on my web browser, also inside my Macintosh HD folder in LR. I ran Grand Perspective and to my surprise the files were all on my HD, when I thought they would be just in the cloud, although "referenced"there in the LR catalog, therefore accessible when online.

In OneDrive preferences, under Account, I can choose which files to sync from my OneDrive, by ticking the box - or not - beside each option. If I UNtick,  the warning says "if you stop syncing files or folders, they'll stay on OneDrive but won't be on this Mac. If they're already on this Mac, they'll be deleted".

I want the pictures available to me online in LR Classic, but not stored on my Mac (freeing space).

What are the correct steps? I really do not want to lose my files..

Thanks

You can't do this. Lightroom Classic needs the images to be locally, so you can have them online as well, but not online exclusively. The only way to free up space on the laptop hard disk is by moving the images to an external hard disk.

I had the same thought and question. I am not surprised it is not possible, but then it leaves the problem how to fit all the files on local storage.

I was looking at e.g. Surface Pro 9, but the drive is only 256GB and my present PC is struggling with 256GB C drive and 512GB D drive.  Do Lr users all have external hard drives permanently connected to their computers??
