LR Library - No tally of photos in folder

I am currentl;y using LR version 9.3. My library is organized by year/month/date. The number of photos in each of the "daily" folders is clerarly indicated but the monthy (and hence; yearly) totals all read "0". This problem arose shortly before the recent upgrade but has continued since.

What might be the problem? What is the solution?

There is a menu 'Library - Show Photos in Subfolders', which apparently got unchecked.
