LrC as primary editor with Lr for Travel

Hello All,

Have been using LrC for last few years as my primary photography editing application, and plan to continue the same.

Now, while on travel would like to us Lr on my iPad for culling and editing photos, so that it simplifies the process.

1. LrC would be primary editing appication

2. Sync with Cloud, so complete catalog is available in Lr

3. As needed culling and editing done in Lr, which synchronises with LrC, and changes including the editing and deleting of pics is reflected in LrC and Lr

Could you guide me with the relevant process to be followed. Thanks

2. Sync with Cloud, so complete catalog is available in Lr

That will require you to place every photo in your LrC catalog into a synced Collection (or multiple synced Collections, created from Folders).

3. As needed culling and editing done in Lr, which synchronises with LrC, and changes including the editing and deleting of pics is reflected in LrC and Lr

Editing- Yes,

Culling, Deleting- No.  When you delete files in Lr it will not delete them from the local storage and folder in LrC, but it will remove them from the 'All Synced Photographs' list.

Thanks @Rob_Cullen for your views.

So, if I make LrC as primary with improrts done in LrC, then only way is to replicate my entire folder structure in "Collections/Collection Sets" which shall sync with Cloud thorugh 'Smart Previews". Hmmm...thats a dirty way of getting it done and does not provdie with complete flexibility.

"...only way is to replicate my entire folder structure in "Collections/Collection Sets"..."

Not even then will it replicate, because you cannot sync Collection Sets (or Smart Collections), only individual Standard Collections.

Standard Collections will sync images to the cloud (as mentioned- smaller proxy files). Collections become 'Albums', in Lr and you can gather Albums together in 'Folders', but still not (automatically) replicating you local folder hierarchy in LrC.

I might suggest that many LrC users only sync selected Collections from LrC. In my case I could never imagine wanting to edit all my 40,000 LrC photos on an iPad.

You will never get "complete flexibility".

The "Trick" just mentioned by @Jao vdL  applies only to photos you Import to the iPad that will then automatically sync down to LrC and 'land' in your preference defined folder structure  Lr > LrC. It doesn't work in reverse ie. LrC > Lr.

I do a variation of this. There are a number of things to be aware of. One is that if you sync from Classic to the cloud, you will get lower resolution "smart previews" in the cloud for your images. For most purposes this works fine and can generally be workable. When you import in the cloud version, you will get the full resolution raw files in the cloud and they will also download to Classic to full resolution.

Second, be very aware that keywords do not sync between Classic and Cloud.  So if you expect to do this on the iPad your work is for naught.

Third, if you mix editing in Classic and editing in the cloud apps, there is a large opportunity to lose edits. Often sync between Classic and cloud gets stuck and then it tends to just overwrite edits made on mobile. This is less an issue if you travel for a while with just the iPad and your Classic is not open on your main computer during that time but can be an issue if like I do you have Classic always running.

Thanks @Jao vdL for your quick feedback.

So, if I read correctly, Adobe is pushing users to make Lr as Primary and hence imports on cloud would get full resolution raw files, but at the same time import in LrC woudl provide low resolution "smart previews".

They do not want users to have a simplified workflow with seamless integration between Lr and LrC, which provides capabilties to switch between applications as you go.

Now, how would this work incase we have catalog for last 10 years, and with a detilaed folder structure created based on Year | Date & Location (Ex: YYYYMMDD_Location).

Since I plan to use LrC as primary, and edits on Lr are only on the move, I'm fine with not having keywords synchronized. My primary objective of Lr is culling and minor edits while on the move, if thsi can be taken care, I shoudl be good with.

The trick is to set up the sync location in the exact same location and dated folder structure as you normally import with (it's a setting in Classic). ANything imported in Cloudy will end up filed perfectly in your normal folder structure. Then also add your voice to this thread I started in 2017! https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-ideas/p-should-be-able-to-sync-full-raw-files-to-the-cloud-not-just-smart-previews/idi-p/12248616
