P: Allows Local images on a removable (CF Express) drive to be edited.

If you insert a camera card and attempt to edit images while still on the card.  Lightroom will permit this and writes XMP data back to the source volume.  Since Camera cards are often erased and reused, the image files and the edits are lost.

Lightroom needs to prohibit users from edits in the Local mode until the images have been copied to a permanent storage location.  The minimum solution should be a severe warning when ever the user attempts to access images on a camera card (SD, CF Express, XQD etc.)

We've opened a ticket to investigate possibilities. Handling of CF-Express by the operating systems makes this problematic.

@Cletus  Do you find this behavior limited to CF Express?
Additionally, do you see it Mac and Windows?

Rikk, on my Mac system I only see this behaviour when using CfExpress cards, which would seem to be the same problem with that card type that has existed in LrC ever since they started to appear. So perhaps this latest iteration with LrD is not entirely unexpected?

Jim, I am only seeing edits/xmp saving possible on CF-Express and only on Mac.

Rikk, I can't check on WIndows anymore, I removed my old Windows system last year.

Last night, I remembered that I can create that same scenario using non-CFExpress cards, though that's only in the situation where the standard camera-generated file structure is not present on the card, so that the images are in a root-level folder. I posted about this in thread a week or so ago: https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-ecosystem-cloud-based-discussions/lr-local/m-p/14407454#M88...

Different problem to the issue being discussed here, but the same end result.

I haven't checked to see if that behaviour also happens in LrC, but I'll do that later and report back.

Just checked in LrC and the same "issue" occurs when using an SD card with none of the standard camera-generated folder structure (DCIM etc.) and images in a root-level folder. The SD card appears only on the Files section of the Import dialog, and after import images can be added or deleted.

That does not surprise me, because the opposite is also true. Try this. Take a USB thumbdrive and add a 'DCIM' folder with some image files. Lightroom Classic will now see this thumbdrive as a memory card, so it will automatically show the import dialog if you have set this in the preferences and insert the thumbdrive in your computer. So it seems both Lightrooms mainly use this folder as the indicator of what type of drive this is.

I see this behavior On CF Express Cards, and removable Thumb Drives,  On further testing SD Cards and XQD cards are treated properly.

I have noted that some apps when encountering a removable drive Ask permission to access the drive.  This includes externally mounted HDDs.  At a minimum, Lightroom Desktop should be able to recognise the drive as removable and ask permission to use this in the Lightroom Local mode and warn the user that the files might not be available if the drive is removed.
