"Something went wrong" when trying to use blur on image in Lightroom

Getting the "Something went wrong" + "Please try again later" error message when trying to apply blur (without any blur previously applied) on an image in Lightroom.

I usually encounter this when my internet connection is slow. I usually resolve this by waiting till my connection improves, and sometimes just be restarting the app.

Now neither of those is true, and the last stage is gets to when applying the blue is "Detecting depth using AI..." before the error is displayed.

Was working fine about ~12 hours ago as of posting this. I'm thinking this is a server issue rather than a local one, but if there's anything I could do to resolve it on my end, let me know, thanks.

Update a few days later: Looks like blur is working very smoothly now on any image I try to apply it on. Very fast loading time with little chance of errors, if any. I haven't done anything on my end, so perhaps something has changed server-side with regards to Lightroom's AI-centric features, like blur? Either way, it seems to be back to normal now, which is great. I'll update this thread again if any previously-mentioned issues resurface, or if I encounter any new ones within this tangent. Tha

Hi @lefrost, Thank you for reaching out, and welcome to the Lightroom community!

Could you please share more details about the issue, such as what version of Lightroom you're on, your device model and specifications, and whether the issue occurs with certain image formats, such as DNG/ RAW, JPEG, etc., or with all of them? Relevant Screenshots and screen recordings would also be really helpful.

While we wait, you can try out these fixes below. See if they help.

1) Restart Your Device: A simple restart can clear temporary glitches and free up system resources.

2) Re-import the Image: Try removing the problematic image from Lightroom and re-importing it. This can sometimes resolve issues with corrupted image data.

3) Check for App Updates: Ensure you have the latest version of Lightroom installed.

4) Clear App Cache: Clearing the app's cache can remove temporary files that may be causing conflicts.

Going off the information in the post, it seems like you're on Android: Go to Settings > Apps > Lightroom > Storage > Clear Cache.

Let us know how it goes!

Cheers!

Noel

Further details: Issue occurred on JPG images. Lightroom version 10.4.1, for Android. Device is a Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4, running Android 14.

Troubleshooting:

1) I restarted my device, and am now able to apply blur on images, but the issue still occurs on the images I originally encountered it on.

2) I tried re-importing the problem images, and importing a duplicate of the same image from my local library, but the same issue still occurs.

3) Yup, I'm on the latest Lightroom version (10.4.1) for Android, with no option to update any higher on Play Store.

4) I cleared Lightroom's cache, but the issue still occurs for the problem images.

All the problem images are JPGs. It's not a pressing issue for me now, and I've decided to not use the problem images for any purpose. But technically I still don't know the reason why the inability to apply blur to those specific images arose in the first place, nor how to mitigate it for those images specifically.

Thanks for the reply. If the team needs any further specific info from me for troubleshooting, let me know.

Thanks for the info! Out of curiosity, are the images from the same source? You mentioned that all the problem images are JPGs. Can you try importing a couple of new images to check if you experience the same behavior with them?

Yep, same experience with newly imported images. Some images are screenshots, others taken with my smartphone's camera. Additionally, I've also now encountered a "something went wrong during refinement" error message numerous times when using the blur function these past few days, which I'd never seen previously. (See screenshot for error message.) To mitigate the error, I've tried with various internet connections, restarting my device, toggling VPN on and off, restarting Lightroom, etc. Still using the latest version of Lightroom. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme and reason to the errors occuring that I can locally affect; all I do now is retry over and over again, until it either succeeds or I lose patience. In my experience, it usually takes around 3-6 tries if it failed on the first attempt.

Furthermore, I should add that at this point, my experience is that I expect the error to occur on any image I try to apply blur to in Lightroom, not just a few bad apples like I had originally thought.
