Transferring Photos to External SSD Hard Drive

I want to transfer my photos to an external hard drive, and work from there, instead of my laptop to save space.  How will my lightroom act when accessing these files, and will I have to rebuild my collections and catalogs with the switch? Is there a correct way to transfer the files other than just  copy and paste?

Can you confirm which Lightroom you are using, Lightroom (cloud) or Lightroom Classic. It sounds like you are using Classic, but you posted in the Lightroom forum.
