Unable to open nef files to Lightroom2020 Nikon 3400

Hello , 

I am using latest version of Lightroom 2020 .

and Mac  version 14x .

I have nef raw files from Nikon d3400  and I am unable to open in Lightroom  as raw files .

when I open nef file , Lightroom is converting it to jpeg file and I am loosing quality of picture . 
please let me know how I open nef files as camera raw file in Lightroom and photoshop ??

Lightroom 2020 is NOT the latest version!

Lightroom v4.0  IS the latest version.

You cannot "Open" image files in Lightroom!

You can "ADD" image files into the Lightroom Catalog (a database file).

Nikon D3400 NEF files have been supported since Version 1.0 of Lightroom.

Lightroom does NOT, and cannot, change your raw files to JPG by importing.

I suspect you have used the Mac Photos App (Capture?) to 'Download / Import' your photos. This will 'hide away' the raw files in a Mac Library that is not accessible to Lightroom. And you are only importing the JPG previews.

Tell us how you are importing your files from the camera to your computer.

And report your Lr version from the Menu: Help > System Info.

Please remember that Lightroom does not Open images, but rather you must Import them. How are you importing images and is it possible to confirm that they are NEF files prior to import?
