What does this icon mean in LR app?

I understand that the LR icon means the image has been added to Lightroom cloud, but what does the pencil/edit symbol mean? I thought it meant the photo had been edited, but there are also photos I've edited without that icon.

The LR icon with the pencil means that image in your camera roll has been imported and edited in Lightroom.

The icon with only LR (no pencil) means the image has been imported into Lightroom and is not yet edited.
