I can't find an option under 'edit' to organise a backup of my catalog in my LR version 8.4.

You have the cloud based Lightroom Desktop installed which doesn't offer backups as its cloud based.
Lightroom Classic does offer backups (the traditional Lightroom), are you sure you don't want to be using that?

Thank you for the answer.
1. Does that mean that in the cloud version a backup is no need and the applicable catalogus is available in the cloud?
2. What are the most imporatant benefits of the LR classic compared to the cloud version?
3. If I should go for the classic, how to get my pictures and catalogus from the cloud to the classic?

"how to get my pictures and catalogus from the cloud to the classic?"
1. Install Lightroom-Classic (using the Adobe Creative Cloud Desktop App)
2. Turn on [Sync] (Click on the Cloud icon top-right of screen)
Done! That's all you need to do and your Cloud photos will all automatically download to a local folder in your system.
Hint: Set the Preferences/Sync tab in Lr-Classic to set Folder and sub-folder options for the downloaded files.

Many thanks for this info.
I installed the Classic version (was in my abo, but didn' install it yet).
Imported roughly 17000 pictures from my specific Photo disk ... took a while.
And now I will try to synchronise the Cloud and the Classic version. If I don't succeed I come back to you.

I tried to synchronize my LR Classic with my LR Cloud.
On the Classic version already ‘days’, yes days, the little blue circle is turning and the numbers that are shown and don’t change (translated from Dutch to English) are:
Cloud storage
178.5 GB of the 1TB used
Local activity: 1 picture is synchronized
The only thing I can do is “pause”.
I did restart the windows PC several times, no change.
1. Any idea what is going wrong?
2. Can I find which picture is causing the problem?
3. How to solve the problem without loosing the rest of the synchronized items?

Maybe I cannot give an answer, but a couple of points may help other give you help-
If you click the 'cog wheel' on the Sync dialog- what do you see in the Sync Activity panel?
What Folder have you set with the [Choose] button for the image File downloads?
Is that folder available with full Read/Write properties?
Do you see any files in that folder with File Explorer/Finder?
Do you have sufficient disk space in your system for all the Cloud files to download?

Thank you for the aswer Rob.
Everything looks ok for my. The synchronisation struggles with a 'single' picture and therefore the synchro never stops. Unfortunately I cannot find the troublemaking picture. Other and newer pictures are synchronised.

You may get a clue to problem images by going to Lightroom Web and looking for Sync Issues.
