I don't understand why, when I create masks in Lightroom for, let's say, subject and background, I cannot simply click the background mask and make a change, such as clarity, without having said effect applied to the entire photo.
I've created masks for the person and the background.
I then click the desired mask, and change the effects.
These effects apply to the entire photo, not to the mask itself.
Is there something I'm missing?

What version of Lightroom & the operating system are you working on?
To simplify the process, use the color overlay to highlight the affected/unaffected areas.

I suspect you might be using Lightroom-Classic, and-
You are making adjustments in the 'Basic' panel, and not the 'Masking' panel.
