Question

(Win)Unable to play videos in Lightroom

I can import videos to Lightroom, but when I try to play them or edit, it shows text ''Unable to play this video - it requires a component that isn't available for this computer''- But it won't say what is missing.

I have the newest version of Lightroom.

Has anyone else had this problem and what can I do for it? 😞

I am having the same issue. It's a .MOV file imported from a Nikon Z5 camera. I am using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom (not classic) version 7.1.2. I am running Windows 10. Please let us know what the issue is.

Video files are complicated!  ".MOV", ."MP4", "AVI", "AVCHD" and more are referred to as containers.  Inside is a long list of video and audio parts that make up the video.   One of the most important is the "video codec" that determines how the video portion is coded and then decoded for editing and viewing.  The most common and editible video codec is called "H.264".  If your camera is using anything else, it may challenge video editing in any system.  Check the camera settings and ensure it is set to a common video codec.   If you have valuable footage captured in less common codecs, it can be converted by (free) programs like "Handbrake".

Hi there,

Thanks for reaching out. We're sorry for the trouble with Lightroom. We're here to help.

Could you please share the specific version of Lightroom & the operating system you are working on? What format of video are you working on? Has this started to happen since a recent update of windows or Lightroom?

Have you tried any troubleshooting steps?

If you are working on HEVC output from non-ios devices, check this article to learn more: https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-elements/using/hevc-decoding-on-windows.html

Let us know if this helps,

Thanks!

SAME PROBLEM.  I have been able to play videos from google pixel 7 from when i purchased the phone in 2023 until today, 5/22/2024.

this morning as I opened LightRoom on my PC, i got this message that Lightroom is missing some important files as I started Lightroom.  Light room opens; however videos wont play.  For the videos in portrait mode, only a message that they won't play.  videos in landscape mode, I got the message to upload a codec,  which I followed the link to the google play store, clicked on the $0.99 link and installed.

The link the prompt in Lightroom sent me to is: HEVC video extensions, https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9nmzlz57r3t7?hl=en-us&gl=US.

However, the videos still won't play, and I continue to get the missing some important files message.

of note:

1. the  videos will play if I look at them in LIghtRoom on the google Pixel Pro 7.

2. when I attempt to open the Program Files/WindowsApps, my computer does not allow me to access that file.  Yes, I'm the computer owner.

3.  not sure why a july 2023 problem show up in may 2024.

4. i checked for updates on my PC and updated all drivers (using Norton)

5. does anyone have a solution i've not found ?
