how to recover my photos from backup

I changed computers recently. I backed up my entire lightroom catalogue on my Synology external drive to be able to switch them to the new computer. I see the files on Synology but cannot get them back in Lightroom. Somehow I managed to import something but all photos are empty. How do I proceed?

The Lightroom catalog does not contain the images. It is a database, and it has a record of where the images are located on your computer or on external hard drives connected to your computer, but it doesn't contain the images. The process of backing up the images is something you are responsible for doing yourself, and is an independent process, totally unrelated to Lightroom. There is an option in the import dialog to save a copy of the images being imported to a second location. But that is the only "backup" option for images in Lightroom.
