Note: Please see Noelle's updated post which now includes full read and write support for WebP

We are excited to share that Photoshop beta now has read-only support for the WebP file format.

WebP has quickly gained traction as a modern file format for working with images on the web and is natively supported by a growing list of tools, software libraries and web browsers. Additionally, WebP images are typically smaller than their PNG and JPEG counterparts, making them simpler and faster to use.

In previous versions of Photoshop, customers relied on an external plug-in to open WebP files, but with this Photoshop beta update, WebP files can now be opened directly in the application. Our team is also actively working on save support for WebP and hopes to release that functionality in Photoshop beta soon.

We look forward to hearing your feedback as we work to expand file format support in Photoshop.
