Mask Issue - Both black and white brush subtracting from mask

While using a layer mask in Photoshop Beta on Macbook Pro (OS Sonoma 14.2.1) to refine the edges of an isolated photo of a person, both the black and white brush colors started subtracting from my mask. I found that using the paint bucket tool worked correctly (black was subtracting, white was adding like it should) and after playing with it, the brush tool began to work again. This may need to be looked at in any case.

I found the culprit. It's me. I'm the culprit. I'm using an XP-Pen drawing tablet/monitor and I bumped my eraser hotkey and it had all these wonderful side effects! I'm not sure why it acted the way it did, but there it is...

No sooner after posting this, the brushes started acting up again, but this time they reversed (black adding and white subtracting). Again, using the paint bucket tool fixed it for a minute, but they quickly went back to reverse roles. I'm using the normal brush tool on normal mode, opacity 100%, flow 100%, smoothing 10%, angle 0% and pressure sensitivity on.
