P: Alternate Type Glyphs Not Working in 2023 (v24.x)

I am using Photoshop 24.0.0. When I use the font Leander Script Pro Bold (a script font), alternate letters show when I rollover the letter, but when I try to choose an alternative, it doesn't change. I opened the file in Photoshop 23.3.2 and it worked just fine.

@Outtacontext

Can you show two screenshots, one from 24.0 and one from 23.3.2 with more than we can see in your tiny sample?

Include:

  • text with a character that has an alternate with that character selected (as you have)
  • character panel with panel menu (upper right) open
  • glyphs panel

Also, tell us which screen shot goes with which version.

Jane, the screenshot in 24.0.0 looks identical to the way it looks in older versions. And, when I open the glyph panel, and click on an alternate, it doesn't change in 24.0.0

I am experiencing this issue in 2023 as well. Alternate glyphs are not replacing the primary glyph. Even selecting an alternate glyph from the glyph panel inserts the primary glyph.

Same here. Could copy paste a txt layer from into PS24 with the alternate glyph from PS 23 , but then I again couldn't change the glyph versions.

Using Freight Sans font for numbers drops them down, normally we are able to select a different glyph character to get it inline. After updating to 2023, you can still select the right glyph, but nothing happens? Any ideas how to fix this issue?

Hello folks!

I am a T-shirt designer and I mostly work with fancy phonts to create my designs. Since last week I have major troubles working with glyphs / alternate characters in my fonts. All the fonts used to work properly before the update.

ISSUE 1 - pop-up does not change after chosing an alternate.

KuraHarabura_0-1667850990338.png

Well, this is a fancy font having 5 alternates for each letter. I typed Lorem Ipsum text and changed P to the filled one. After the change if I want to access the other alternates again, they do not show.

KuraHarabura_1-1667851080587.png

ISSUE 2 - letters do not change at all!

KuraHarabura_2-1667851143421.png

I created several designs with this font before and it worked well. In this case the alternate characters do show, but after clicking it they do not change at all.

When I want to insert the character from the Glyphs map, it inserts the default.

KuraHarabura_3-1667851257481.png

(you see a different letter "p" was to be inserted)

3. ISSUE 3 - text already typed with alternates changes back to default letters after clicking on it.

An older design, where I manually changed each letter for the most realistic look.

KuraHarabura_4-1667851388892.png

After I click on the text to edit...

KuraHarabura_5-1667851411397.png

Voila! All the letters are the default, the same.

I would really like this bug resolved soon as the peak season is coming.

Thank you!

Running on Win 10.

Did this change the exact time you installed Photoshop 2023?

I assume you kept the old version - does this now happen in Photoshop 2022, or does it still work as before?

Hi, good news, @Outtacontext and other affected users, Photoshop 24.0.1 is out with a fix for this issue: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/fixed-issues.html

Please run the update from your Creative Cloud desktop application and report if it cures your problem!

Unfortunately the newest update, 24.01, did not fix this problem as I am currently experiencing it with Bookman JF Pro.

Hi, @csdesignco @none of the 3 issues described by @KuraHarabura are fixed? Is that font an Adobe Font?

@J453

Hello! 2 of 3 issues are solved for me:

1 - I can insert alternates from the Glyph panel again

2 - I can switch between alternates while typing from the pop-up

Thirs issue remains - text written in older PS version using alternates...

KuraHarabura_0-1668947766988.png

goes back to default characters when clicking on it:

Issue still not fixed for me. Version 24.1.1. Using a font created in font forge which works perfectly across all other programmes but not here. Glyphs showing when I highlight the letter but when I click them nothing happens, remains on original letter. Last version it works properly is 22.2

Please make sure the option is on in Preferences. The default is off. If you still do not see the alternate glyphs on canvas, please share the font that shows the issue. Thanks!

@Dan27069967k3pl  Do you have this issue with all fonts in your system, or all fonts created with font forge, or particular font(s) created with font forge? Do you mind sharing a font with this issue with us?

If that is possible, please report the issue and attach the font.

I'm using Pauline Didone Variable in PhotoShop 2023 and cannot get some sets of Glyphs to work using any of the methods: "live" Suggested Glyphs, Type Layer Properties, Glyphs window. I've tried checking/unchecking Missing Glyph protection.

For example, I cannot choose the an alternate lower case r from the Swash set (nothing happens); a bullet ornament from the Swash set turns into a '4'.  The affected groups include ornaments, Stylistic Set 1, and Swashes, to name a few. Some sets work fine.

In Illustrator—same issue but only for some Glyph sets. The ampersand, specifically, will not change.

In InDesign everything seems to work fine. So the Glyphs aren't missing.

I have never encountered this issue (to this extreme) with an Adobe Font.

Is there a workaround aside from typing in InDesign?

Thank you!
