P: AMD Display Driver crashing when using the Select & Mask tool

Just updated to the latest 2015.5 version and find that after a few minutes with the new Select and Mask tool photoshop crashes my AMD Display Driver. Need then to end photoshop. Using Win 10 fully updated and the latest AMD Driver. The crash happens consistently. I haven't had time yet to discover if other features crash the driver.

Peter, what specific AMD video card do you have?  Can you also share what the crash report looks like from windows? (I'm specifically curious about the "faulting module") Thanks!

It's an AMD Radeon 7800 Series processor. The software is 16.6.1. Not sure what you mean about a crash report. The driver crashes and recovers repeatedly until I kill Photoshop with the Task Manager. Let me know if you want me to test out any scenarios.

I think we are looking at different version terminology. When I look at the software version it says 16.20.1025 I think the other version related to the Radion Software. Sorry about that. It is definitely the latest version available released on 02 Jun 2016.

I am having the same issue.   I have an AMD Radeon R9 270.  I updated the driver after the first crash on 6/21

I went to AMD and updated the software for my Driver on 6/23.  I was able to use the select and mask feature, but when I tried to add an iris blur the driver crashed again.  Here is my system info from the video card software:

Made the test with only Ps running and it worked perfectly. I am to test with Lr and Ps running at the same time and see if it crashes like it was doing.

If I run Ps alone the new Select and Mask works perfectly. If I run through and with Lr it crashes. My setup is Win10, AMD Radeon (TM) R9 200 Series with latest drive installed.

I've tested this again on my system and it makes no difference if Lightroom is running or not. After about 5 minutes painting with the refine edge brush in select and mask, Ps crashes the video driver every time. In my case Lr is irrelevant.

Yep, Thanks John. That is what I do, but there are a number of functions that do not work without the GPU. For example the new Liquify Face. I think there are restrictions on the use of artboards too. Let's hope there is an update soon.

I found out that Normal mode works for a lot of the other setting. However select and mask still sucks but doesn't crash. Liquify will work in normal.

I have just seen this after raising the issue separately myself. I get exactly the same symptoms as you. The refine edge brush crashes the driver. Crashes are reduced , but not eliminated, with GPU is basic mode.  I have AMD HD7900 with software revision 16.7.2 (that came out a few days ago - but has not resolved the problem)

I have raised the issue here , and as a problem report to AMD.

Hi David,
Thanks for this. I also updated the driver to the latest from a couple of days ago. I'm getting a bit longer on select and mask but it still crashes. 

It's a real problem as selecting is a fundamental activity for Photoshop!

Agree this activity is central to using Photoshop. I am disappointed that we have not seen an acknowledgement of the issue from Adobe. I would be happy to be involved in any testing as the problem is repeatable.

Since updating Photoshop to CC2015.5 the select and mask tools are causing the video driver to crash. I get an AMD message stating that the video driver stopped and restarted - following which Photoshop freezes and can only be shut down via task manager.
My PC is running Windows 10 64 bit (build 10586.420) . It has an i7-3970k processor and 64GB RAM.
The video card is an AMD HD7900Top which is an approved card running at 1GHz with 3GB video RAM running 3 monitors (the card has 6 ports). The video driver software version is AMD Radeon 16.7.2 which was updated today (the previous version 16.6.2 also crashed with this same tool).
The crash occurs when using the refine edge tool within select and mask.
I also have CS6 and the equivalent tools in that version (refine edge) cause no issues.
Disabling GPU alleviates the crashes but doing that I also lose other useful working tools so is not really an option.

I had the same problem with AMD Display Driver crashing.
Now I use the old driver 16.3.2. I also reduced the GPU power a little.

Now I have no problems with crashing down. But this is NO solution for a long time!

I have been running now for a week without any crashes which occurred after a strange problem with windows. It seems the mouse setting in control panel>mouse>pointer options,"automatically move pointer to default button in a dialogue box" was checked.

After turning this off my crashes ceased. If I turn it on they continue. My latest driver is 16.7.2. and my gpu is at the highest, "advanced." I hope this helps someone.

I don't have this option set, so it's not a fix for me.

I tried un-installing AMD drivers and re-installing the older 16.3.2 version. The crashes continued.
I have therefore - re-installed the latest AMD driver 16.7.3.
Note 16.7.3 is the latest (which dropped down using the "update driver" button) and is newer than 16.7.2 shown on AMDs website. I was therefore hopeful - but the driver still crashes when using select and mask.

Like you I am disappointed that Adobe have not re-joined the thread to ask for further information or give an update (after asking a question 4 weeks ago)  - given the issue is common, repeatable, and this is marked as the channel through which to raise bugs and issues .
