P: Convert to Video Timeline option missing - Apple M1 devices

I am not able to select anything but "Create Frame Animation" in the Timeline. I am trying to create a Video Timeline, but not using Frame animation. This option isn't in the bottom left or top right of the Timeline menu.

I have tried resetting my preferences, uninstalling and re-installing, creating a new document, and converting all layers to smart objects, and none of those have worked. I have a macbook pro with macOS Big Sur version 11.2.3 with an Apple M1 chip.

As far as I can tell, Adobe hasn't even reached out to anyone about this.
So, long story short, no solution currently.

Actually, I retract my previous statement. After working in the prescribed method (running PS manually through Rosetta), I've suffered 3 program crashes in the last 90 minutes, even with relatively uncomplicated files (with timeline animation and without), so I would say this is a completely unstable way to run PS. (The first crash cost me a ton of work.) As of now in my own experience there's no stable way to get timeline animations on PS for M1 macs.

I figured it out last night x.x I run on Macs which both run on an M1 Silicon chip, and the update Adobe pushed to let Photoshop run natively on these removes these otpions unless you force Photoshop to run on Rosetta. Once you check that "Run on Rosetta" option then the "Render Video" option appears and everything tracks according to the documentaiton.

I have the same problem. In Photoshop trying to open an AE image sequence png, all numbered continuous but keep getting greyed-out buttons with the red question mark on the layer. 

I co-incidentally also have a mac-mini with M1 chip. Is this a glitch?

No glitch, just a work around for the M1 chip:

Go to the PS app in your Applications folder.

Select the app, and then press Command-I (or right-click/use the File menu and select Get Info.). ...

In the Info window, look for a checkbox labeled, “Open using Rosetta”. ...

Close the Info window.

If you're already running the app, quit and relaunch.

Hi Ya'll, 

I've been trying to render the animation i made to a video file ( quicktime or mp4) but when I click export "render video" 

The only option photoshop gives me is to render in Jpeg, PNG or other image files... no video files. 

I never had that problem before (when working on Intel Mac's). I've been working on the new Macbook Pro with M1 chip since a month 

and am wondering if the problem could have anything to do with the fact that PSD is still a Beta version at this time (for M1)? 

Anyone that can help? it's driving me crazy... 🙂

Yes, it's a limitation on M1 Macs. You have to live with it until a future update may fix it.

Mine's worked try go to File > Import > Video Frame To Layers. Then select the video you want

What version of Photoshop are you on? There's no Video Frame to Layers option on the latest Mac version as far as I can see.

Thanks for the idea - I tried it again just in case something has changed
over the months - but it still states that it cannot reave the video file.
Which is silly since I have exported it in multiple ways and it doesn't
accept any of them (not mp4, not mov, etc.).

I am on the most recent version (2021) and there is a Video Frames to
Layers, but it is the same result as when I drag and drop. Maybe you will
have better luck.

I'm on version 13.0 x64, in my version i can import both mov and mp4 into gifs don't know about other video files tho, sorry if this doesn't helped i hope you will also find the solution to this issue.

I hadn't found a solution myself, I had resigned myself to it just never working lol. But those instructions you sent actually just ended up working for me luckily! Thank you for sharing that info, and I hope you'll get a response from Adobe or be able to find a solution that works for you as well!

Hi Lindsey, 

I couldn't see it at first either. But if you open your applications folder -> Photoshop 2021 -> then open up that folder too -> on the actual Photoshop 2021 application -> Get Info. There you should see the Open with Rosetta option.
