P: Copy/Paste for layer names suddenly stops working - Windows

Explorer ,
Jul 29, 2025 Jul 29, 2025

Hello,

after the update from v26.8.1 to v26.9, the following bug occurs:

My workflow involves precise layer naming. I often have to re-use the same part of a layer name convention, so for sake of speed, instead of writing the same name convention on a layer hundreds of times, I use to copy-paste the layer name from one layer to another.

To do that I use the shortcut ctrl+C and ctrl+V.

Unfortunately after the latest update, the copy paste function for layer NAMES stoped working and no name is copied/pasted. The layer itself ist copied instead.

Neither restarting PS does help, nor re-installing it.

Hope this can be solved quickly.

Thank you in advance for your concern.

@3Dvice I just tested on my system with Photoshop version 26.9, and it's working fine for me, have you tried manually resetting your Photoshop preferences

Remember to back up your settings before doing the preference reset

Thanks for the hint: Yes, I just did, but the bug remains, unfortunately. In the meanwhile, another PS update came in, but this one did not resolve the problem. I now went back to v26.8.1 and here it works fine...

Hey, @3Dvice. Welcome to the Photoshop Community. We'll need more info to help you figure this out.

+1 to @Ged_Traynor, I've tried to recreate this, and Photoshop worked as expected. First, please try what @Ged_Traynor has suggested, and if that does not help, please share a video of the issue with the exact steps and the system info from Photoshop Help > System info > Copy and paste into a text document > Upload and attach here.

Also, please test and confirm if the issue exists with Photoshop (Beta). You can get Photoshop (beta) from the Creative Cloud > Apps tab > Beta Apps section.

Thanks!

@Sameer K Thank you very much for your reply. I've already tried what @Ged_Traynor suggested, manually reseting the Photoshop preferences, but this did not fix the issue. I have also completely deinstalled Photoshop v26.9 (without keeping the preferences and settings) and re-installed it, but this did not fix the issue.

I hereby confim that the issue also exists with the current Photoshop (Beta) version!

I've attached the System Info File (from the PS Beta version) here.

Since I am currently not able to make a video, let me outline the exact steps here with screenhots:

- At first, I create 2 layers, Layer 1 and Layer 2
- My goal ist to copy the name "Layer 1" and rename Layer 2 to "Layer 1"
- I double-klick the Name of Layer 1
1-DoubleKlick_Name_Layer1_Ctrl-C.jpg
- The Layer 1 name is marked
- I press "Ctrl+C" to copy the Layer 1 name
- Then I double-klick the name of Layer 2
2-DoubleKlick_Name_Layer2_Ctrl-V.jpg
- The Layer 2 name is marked
- I press "Ctrl+V" to paste the "Layer 1" name and overwrite the Layer 2 name
- Expected result: The Layer 2 is renamed "Layer 1"
- Actual result: The whole Layer is copied and pasted as "Layer 3"
3-CopyResult_Layer3.jpg
I can reproduce this issue with the latest Photoshop v26.9 on two different computers. Going back to v26.8.1 helps, since the issue does not occur there, but this is just a workaround.

Any additional help is appreciated. Thanks!

@3Dvice I followed your steps exactly, and I still can't reproduce the issue, see screenshots and history

Do you get the same result by right-clicking and selecting copy and paste instead

I just downloaded the Beta version to test, and I can replicate the issue there, seems to be fine with the right click, copy and paste, Ctrl V seems to trigger it in the Beta version, none Beta version works fine for me

@Ged_Traynor This issue only occurs when using the keyboard-shortcuts Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V.
When I use right-click and selecting copy and paste instead, it works.

The right-klick however does slow down my workflow massively, since I have to work with lots of exact renamings of lots of layers.

I went back and forth between 26.9 and 26.8.1 several times:
The issue always occurs when updating PS to the latest version (or beta).
The issue goes away when returning to 26.8.1.

@Ged_Traynor I am glad that you were able to reproduce the on the beta-version, too.

Also, I just updated Photoshop to v26.9 on yet another of my computers (also Win10, different setup and graphics-card, etc.) and I can reproduce the issue here too! It seems that this is not just a local phenomenon which just occur on my primary workstation...

@3Dvice I've tested it on both my Windows 10 and 11 PC's with version 26.9 non beta, and it's working fine, I can only replicate the issue with the beta version

@Ged_Traynor Thank you so much for your efforts. So the beta-versions probably has the issue. As for why the 26.9 non beta is buggy on 3 of MY computers, but on non of your computers... I am lost here. I hope @Sameer K or someone from Adobe can shed some light here.

Thanks for the screenshots and steps, @3Dvice, and for the detailed efforts, @Ged_Traynor. I can reproduce this for some attempts, and once it works as expected again, it continues to work until Photoshop is restarted. I've shared this with the team for review & investigation.

Thanks!

Hello,

Exactly the same issue happened to me after updating to 26.9. I tried reseting preferences but that didn't work. Rolling back to 26.8.1 fixed the issue so it's got to be some sort of a bug.

Hope this resolves quickly.

Have a nice day everyone!

I had the exact same problem after the update, previous version - everything is fine. The solutions described above do not help.

Having this issue as well.

I am also having the same issue. Right Click - Copy & Paste works, but Ctrl C & Ctrl V will not copy layer names, but instead copy the whole layer.

I would also add that the “Ctrl + A” key combination to select the entire layer name does not work

I have two machines, one for work (remote) and I noticed that I had this same problem, it is copying and pasting the layer instead of just the name, then I saw that in photoshop on my local machine it was working normally, I saw that the new update was available and I updated, and the same problem started to appear, I believe it is a bug in the version

While the team is investigating this, hide the contextual task bar as a current workaround. Most of the functions (CTRL+A, C, V) mentioned here should work as expected. Also, a fix might soon be available to test in Photoshop (beta).

I hope this helps. Thanks!

@Sameer K that's the reason I couldn't replicate the issue, I always have contextual task bar hidden!

Photoshop 26.9.0 release on PC

When highlighting the text of a layer within the layers window and hitting control-c, the text will not go to the clipboard (yes, clipboard export is on). It will however, go to the clipboard if hitting shift-control-c (copy merged). It will also work if using right-click>copy.

Contrl-P also seems hit or miss. Sometimes it will paste text back into text that is highlighted within the layers window, but sometimes it will paste a whole layer. Seems to happen more if the layer with the text highlighted has a mask on it, but there seems to be no main rhyme or reason.

@johnb63770031 it's a known issue in version 26.9, a workaround is to hide the contextual task bar
