P: CS6 beta crashing on my system (Win, more than 4 scratch disks)

Photoshop CS6 beta is... the most unstable version of Photoshop I've used in the past ten years.

Drag and drop a file? Crash.
Export to PNG? Crash.
Use Liquify? Crash.
Use Iris Blur? Crash.
Do nothing at all? Crash for no reason at all.

And already on a big job with a VERY tight deadline, upon momentarily closing two PSDs I'd spent five hours a piece on, I tried to open the files again for comparison and they were both corrupt. I did nothing whatsoever- only saved and closed them- but Photoshop CS6 corrupted both to the point where I couldn't reopen them in any version of Photoshop. It's gotten to the point where I simply cannot use the program at all, and hope things are fixed in the actual release. Ten years I've been using Photoshop with not a single hitch, and now this beta is simply monumentally broken.

If you know ANY way to fix the stability- whether it's a reinstall or whatever- PLEASE let me know. I'm using CS5 in the meantime but I'd love to take advantage of all of the improvements in CS6.

Ok, so your system is crashing a lot - that is not the experience of other users. The CS6 public beta has been more stable than most previous releases.

And there have been very, very few reports of file corruption.

What OS version are you using?
What does the crash report say?

Hi Chris. I'm running Windows Vista, and I'm not given crash reports. The program simply: "Adobe Photoshop CS6 has stopped working", etc.

Since I posted my question, I uninstalled and reinstalled, and just tried using Liquify again- same issue, same crash.

First: Vista is not a supported OS version for Photoshop CS6.
It may or may not work.

Most likely crashes occurring that often are in your video card driver. Try disabling GPU usage in Photoshop's preferences and relaunch Photoshop.

We've also seen some third party plugins cause crashes (especially ones that try to modify the Photoshop UI).

I've experienced consistent CS6 beta 64-bit (Adobe Photoshop Version: 13.0 (13.0 20120305.m.415 2012/03/05:21:00:00) x64)) crashes trying to open png files via "File open" or drag and drop. Attempting to save jpeg as png causes crash. Ditto with liquify. No problem with iris blur or dragging/dropping jpegs.

Based on my experiences to date with CS6 beta 64-bit, some of the problems you are experiencing are not Vista specific but also occurring on Windows 7 64-bit (see my below post).

Is there any chance you copied plugins from an older version of Photoshop, or mistakenly set the "additional plugins folder" preference to point to an older version of Photoshop?

Maybe some other users are experiencing CS6 beta related Windows Vista and 7 instability besides reflex7 and myself but just haven't reported it....perhaps assuming (like myself) that these problems will be fixed when the retail versions of CS6 are released.

No, there are no known problems like you are seeing. So this won't magically go away in the final release.
Something is wrong on your system, and we need to help you figure out what it is.

Could you post the System Info log (Help -> System Info)?

I did have NIK software plug-ins installed in CS6 beta, which are reflected in below "System Info (before NIK plug-in removal)". They were working fine in the CS6 beta.

As a test, I went to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS6 (64 Bit)\Plug-ins, cut the Nik Software directory out of it, and pasted to a non-Adobe directory location. After doing that, the NIK plug-ins were no longer loading or available in CS6 Beta.

Opened CS6 (post NIK removal), and was able to repeat all mentioned crashes. From this test, appears the Nik plug-ins aren't the culprit.

Update!!!

On 7 May 2012, purchased and downloaded CS6 Extended upgrade for Windows from adobe.com.

Before installing, uninstalled CS6 beta and rebooted.

Installed CS6 Extended upgrade (x86 and 64-bit).

Brought up CS6 Extended (Version 13.0 64-bit) and successfully opened png (through File Open and drag and drop), saved jpeg as png, and performed liquify without any crashes.

NIK software plug-ins also functioning fine, as they were in CS6 beta.

Please consider my specific crash problems experienced under CS6 beta, and noted in previous posts, solved in CS6 Extended "final release" / retail version.

RE: fresh install versus change to retail cure.......who knows--maybe Adobe? Depends on amount of mods, if any, made to final/retail version between time I downloaded and began using beta on 22 March 2012 and when I purchased retail on 7 May 2012.

As with most new or revised software releases, I'm sure there will be other kinks to follow (not talking perverted acts--although I suppose crashes could be considered abnormal behavior outside the acceptable norm).

Well, since posting the initial question and listening to Chris' advice, I purchased a copy of Windows 7 to upgrade my OS. I'll be installing that this week, uninstalling the beta, and buying the retail release. I, too, use NIK plugins so it will be interesting to see if my issues are rectified as well.

Thanks for the added support, RMM. I'll hopefully be able to call this case closed by the end of the week.

JUMPED THE GUN!! But.......

After I changed scratch disk from only one, default disk "C", and chose 5 other, non-OS, internal drives (several TB total free space), the same crashes as mentioned in my previous posts started happening again. The 5 scratch disks, excluding "C" disk (C is my OS drive), configuration was my setup under CS5 Extended 64-bit and worked fine.

As a test, went through and chose one, non-C, disk at a time as a scratch disk, to determine if a specific disk was causing problem,. After each mod, I exited and re-opened Photoshop for the change to take effect and performed same actions that were causing crashes. No crashes regardless of chosen disk. So ruled out a specific disk being the culprit.

Then started increasing number of scratch disks one at a time. Discovered that 4 scratch disks, regardless of the disks chosen, appear to be the max number of scratch disks I can choose under CS6 Extended. Choose 5 disks (doesn't matter what 5, including the C drive) and the crashes reoccur.

Note that the 5 scratch disks configuration causes the same crashes in CS6 Extended 32-bit. Any number of scratch disks less than 5 is no problem....your mileage may vary.
