P: Decoupling the presetted "usual" brush size from OS operating aids (macOS) [2016]

1. Photoshop 23.3.1 (and older!)

2. Mac OS 12.3.1 (and older!)

3. The Setting for brush size is put to "usual",

  • means the diameter of that temporary circle should be exactly the same as the brushstroke, independent of the selected hardness
  • Due to a large monitor, a slightly enlarged view of the mouse pointer can be helpful to some users.
Thanks to the Mac OS operating aids, you can customise this individually.

4. Now the size of the brushstroke and the diameter of that surrounded circle in Photoshop doesn't match any more.

  • While the operating aids of Mac OS display a larger image of the mouse pointer in a fixed solution, the brushstroke in Photoshop is variable and proportional to the zoom factor of the picture.
  • Unfortunatelly the OS operation aid zoom for the mouse pointer influences the diameter of that circle, too.
  • In this case it ist not possible to adjust the position of the brushstroke exactly, that's a pitty.

5. The best would be, if you can set the Ps brushsize decoupled from the OS operating aids. (Maybe a checkbox at that section, which allows you to de-/activate a professional view)

Thanks for listening. Best Frank

@marc21867922j5d2

I had this issue for several years and versions and found out through these forums that the problem was that I had changed my cursor size in System Prefs > Accessibility > Display. Setting the size to Normal fixed the Brush size issue in Photoshop. Can you try that?

Incorrect Brush size: On macOS, the painted result is smaller than the brush cursor size you see on screen, determine if you have an increased Cursor Size specified in your System Preferences: Accessibility > Display settings

Make sure it's set to "Normal"

Are you using a mac os?

If you are, it's probably that the system cursor size is set to something other than Normal.

Go to System Preferences>Accessibility>Display and set the Cursor size to Normal

In photoshop CS6 when using a brush to paint, the actual painted brush mark is smaller than the preview of the brush size.

Incase i mixed you up with my explanation, I’m attaching  a pic that shows (on the left) the size of the selected brush and how small is the painted mark. And on the (left) what i see on a different computer where the brush's size is the same of what is actually painted.

note: the colour i paint is white and the black circle is the brush size preview.

Its very strange because i know that what is painted should be exactly the same diameter of the brush. But that is not the case on the left sample.

Please help im disorientated and cannot work!

I have a problem that no matter what preference options I choose, (normal or full size), and with 100% hardness selected I cannot get the painted area to match the size of the cursor I am using and typically its about 50% of the diameter I have set the brush size to. Did try resetting brush tool but no change. Very annoying, any ideas please?

I seem to recall that both on Mac and Windows there could be OS-side reasons for cursors displaying incorrectly.

Do you have any OS plugins installed that might be involved?

What have you done for trouble-shooting so far?

Restoring Preferences after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved might be a good starting point:

If you're using a drawing tablet like a Wacom, this will be determined y how hard you press.

If not, this could be the type of brush.

Try a standard brush with 100% hardness. Click and Shift+ click in a different location to test.

you should get a straight line between the two points

I have tried resetting the brush tool. I also have created a new photoshop preferences file by moving old one out and restarting PS. I do use a Wacom tablet but checked the opacity and flow settings and don't think this is the problem. When using a mouse with the tablet removed the same problem occurs. I have a mac and both the OS 10.12.6 and photoshop cc 2017 are up to date.

Create a 500 x 500 px document. Set your  round brush to 500 px. Your cursor preview should be as large as your document, but is larger.

I tried both fill and normal size brush, and does not work properly since upgrading to CC2018 on mac OS 10.12.4.

Screen Shot 2017-10-22 at 8.54.56 AM.png

I have all my brush setting unchecked. Was trying to create the red doughnut brush I use on my screenshots.

Also when I hit delete keep getting the annoying menu.Would prefer to not see this each and every time, is there a way to stop this pop up window?

Screen Shot 2017-10-22 at 9.08.42 AM.png

Atelast option delete still fills with foreground color with no pop up window. The options are great, but wold think this should have been in preferences.

Not noticing any oversized cursors on my Mid 2012 MBP, but see if a Tool reset will fix it. Select the brush, right-click on the icon in the top option bar:

If I have feathering, it's larger than the doc, but when the hardness is up all the way, it's the size of the doc.

This is a very annoying problem. Especially with the clone stamp tool. Just upgraded to the cc 2018.

Have been using Photoshop for 15 years and always could preview the effect before applying the brush. Now the preview is so large that the clone stamp tool is almost useless. I don't usually clone stamp with a hard brush. I need to see where the brush is actually going to apply the clone when working near an edge.

Solved the problem!! Shape dynamics is on by default in Photoshop CC 2018. Go to Window/Brushes/ Brush Settings and toggle Shape dynamics off to correct this situation.

Whilst talking about the brush tool, does anyone know how to get that red preview when quickly changing brush size/hardness on graphic tablets? Been doing a lot of research on it and tried multiple times to no avail

You cannot turn off the overlay (displayed with round computed brushes) but you can change the color in Preferences/Cursors Brush Preview color swatch.

The preview overlay is only shown on the round brushes. Other brush types (Sampled and Live Tip) only show the outline.

When i use the brush with  say size 200 the real size on the document/photo is smaller.

It is with the mouse and the wacom tablet.

I reset the brush, no change. I try everything to go to normale.

What is the solution in my settings , or a bug in cc2018?

I have cc2018 now 3 months.
