P: Doesn't constrain proportions when resizing from side handle while holding Shift key

When using Free Transform, holding down Shift while dragging a corner rightly constrains the proportions of the shape while resizing. However, holding down Shift while dragging a side handle does nothing. It should continue to constrain the proportions as it does in Illustrator.

With the 20.0.5 update, there is now a user facing preference under Preferences > General... and check "Use Legacy Free Transform"

Use this preference instead of the PSUserConfig.txt method.

Doesn't matter. This applies to every version, up to the very latest. This should have been fixed a decade ago.

Hi,
uniform scaling when dragging middle handle + shift would be really awesome.

Hi Kris and Roman,

As of today's update, Photoshop 20.0, proportional transform is now the default behavior of transform in Photoshop (except with regard to vector graphics). Please open the Creative Cloud app, download the update and let us know how it goes for. If you do not see the update immediately, please sign in and sign out of the Creative Cloud.

Thank you,
Hannah

Why was a feature that has become as common as copy or paste been changed so that hokdingbthe shift key does the exact opposite of constraining an image, this recent upgrade shift allows for distorting not constraining, constraining is setvas a default now. A smart move, 20+ years ago. A dumb move now.

Agreed. Now people have to remember which Adobe program does it one way, and which Adobe program does it the opposite way. Exactly like I have to remember that in Photoshop, a positive number rotates an object clockwise, but in Illustrator and InDesign, a positive number rotates counterclockwise. It took 24 years to address the issue, and they did it wrong. MAKE IT WORK LIKE ILLUSTRATOR.

So how do we disable this? It borders on foolishness to approach this in the way Adobe has. NO ONE would intuitively do this. It's too late for people to re-learn one of the MOST BASIC FEATURES of Photoshop. Insanity.

Was this actually a 'feature' people were requesting? One of the most oft used shortcuts in Photoshop now has to be 'forgotten'...and not only does that combo not work, but Alt + Shift to scale from center has also been lost because of it. How are we supposed to scale proportionately from center without messing with anchor points now? 1 step forward, 2 steps back...

For anybody who wants to revert back to the old faithful way of doing things, this is the method to do so from John McAssey in the https://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/constrained-resize-ps-cc-20 thread:

To revert to the legacy transform behavior, do the following:

  1. Use Notepad (Windows) or a text editor on Mac OS to create a plain text file (.txt).
  2. Type the text below in the text file:

    TransformProportionalScale 0

  3. Save the file as "PSUserConfig.txt" to your Photoshop settings folder:
    • Windows: [Installation Drive]:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CC 2019\Adobe Photoshop CC 2019 Settings\
    • macOS: //Users/[User Name]/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop CC 2019 Settings/

I have a feeling maybe two people requested this.

Adobe seems to want to make all the shortcuts and functions/commands work the same across the creative cloud universe, but mostly so far it's been photoshop getting the butt of changes in that regard.. It's like adobe is saying we don't care about the way photoshop has worked since 1990, it must work like InDesign or Illustrator or some other creative clound app. No body ever complained on the adobe forums for more than 20 yrs and all of a sudden it's one of the most requested features, really?

All that being said the feature doesn't even work as advertised anyway, so i reverted all our machines back as soon as the workaround posted by ryze was available.

Here's a clue to the bug. When in Transform Mode click on the Maintain aspect ratio button in the tool options bar and be led down the path of transform run amuck..

Now if adobe would only allow us the same pleasure with that god awful Auto-commit.

This is the official response from Adobe: new feature, use Shift to *un* constrain.  Constrain to fixed aspect is now on by default.

In other words, you don't need to press Shift to constrain proportions, just drag any corner to the size you want.

I just spent 20 minutes trying to resize and object in PS 20.0. I could not proportionally scale a placed image. Spent another 10 minutes searching google, trying to figure how to not to bring up old versions of photoshop for the answer. I land here, and the answer is "don't hold shift".

    "Don't hold shift" anymore?

    WUT?

I have to unlearn how many decades of muscle memory?

The most ridiculous compatibility they did I still can't understand that has to do with mentioned other Adobe applications is that they did in CC 2018 and kept in CC 2019 that made me to stay still in CS6 Extended. I have no idea how that what's said in first reply to following topic is so important taking into consideration that you work in Photoshop with many documents while in Illustrator or InDesign rather with one at once. They forced us to some nonsense behaviour in Ps only that was (not explained what exactly!) the same with other applications for some reason, but did anyone thought how much that change affected work in Photoshop? JEA, you was shocked like me:

PLEASE make a revert to legacy in preferences on this topic. You have inconsistencies amongst your products now. Illustrator and AE (and others) are using the old method and Photoshop is now using this new method. 20+ year photoshop user here... I can adapt but it's super nice to have the option to revert to my old ways if possible. Plus, I teach high schoolers the Adobe package and consistency is key. Thank you.

I wonder will they take us seriously and made such option in preferences with next update or leave with way of .txt file to do the same. I only hope they levae us choise which method we want to use.

This is the stupidest update ever. Don't hold shift anymore, Adobe are you serious? I also teach this - don't hold shift in all programs but Photoshop. Lets all have to unlearn something we don't even think about doing since the creation of Photoshop. Just dumb.

I am so, so annoyed by this update. I spent 5 minutes trying to understand if I had pressed some sort of button that was canceling out Shift or if my Mac was being glitchy. Then, I remembered I updated Photoshop, so I came here to find out this is a thing that the developers did on purpose. What kind of monsters remove the Shift function without sending out a mass warning to let users know they are fundamentally changing how one of the most used scale methods work?

@Hannah Nicollet i'd like to know Adobe's reasons for reversing shortcut keys and command behaviors overnight. Who thought this was a good idea? We now need to coach all of our users on the new behaviors, and build custom preference files for others. On each machine we use. Unnecessary and obstructive.
