Export As ... Case Study

  • PNG, JPG, GIF able to export no problem with any version of Photoshop
  • SVG export busted would always empty out input fields upon selecting SVG and lock up with preview message Unknown error occurred

Ben's Specs:

  •  macOS Mojave 10.14.6
  • Adobe Photoshop 22.3.0 = latest Adobe Photoshop patch as of 20210311
  • Adobe Photoshop 21.0.0 = received package installer from Adobe Rep!

Research

After troubleshooting many hours/days on my own, have made a discovery following the steps in this order, works every time(roughly 20+ tests so far) and works offline as well!

  1. Open Adobe Photoshop 22.3.0 - do nothing just leave open

This is the weird part leave Adobe Photoshop 22.3.0 open

  1. Open Adobe Photoshop 21.0.0
  2. Adobe modal appears, which I believe is the key and press OK
  3. As you would before either create a shape or text on the canvas have also tried from an artboard as well, as well as have tested with my actions workflow
    1. With text: convert to shape
    2. Either as shape or text Export As... > SVG - FIXED!!!

FIXED

  • Export As... > SVG
  • Quick Export as SVG

Now with further testing discovered you can close out Adobe Photoshop 22.3.0 and Adobe Photoshop 21.0.0 will work just fine by itself.

What DOES NOT work?

  • If you close Adobe Photoshop 21.0.0 at any time and try to reopen only Adobe Photoshop 21.0.0 you will run into the same problem from before for SVG: unknown error has occurred.
  • Opening only Adobe Photoshop 22.3.0 on it's own Exporting As ... SVG is broken
  • Opening only Adobe Photoshop 21.0.0 on it's own Exporting As ... SVG is broken
  • Reversing the order of steps from above Exporting As ... SVG is broken

Just as baffled as you are and indeed this is related to generators in some way. How this is talking have no idea - in my case this works and hope this will help others as well. Adobe Support Team is also aware of my discovery.

Hello, I am a PS user experiencing the issues outlined here in v22.3. When selecting Export As..., PS doesn't even render an initial preview of the document (even though I have no rendering issues otherwise when using the application). @JeffreyTranberry is there any support you can offer at this point in time? I have never encountered this issue in PS before.

Hi @JeffreyTranberry

I just updated to 22.1.1 and I'm still receiving this same error when I try to export.

I also noticed that I only receive the error when my document color mode is set to duotone.

Thanks for reporting this issue. Please install 22.1.1 which was released late last night. It contains a fix for unknown errors in Export As.

@john_dunkelberg I just started getting this now as well. Not sure if it's the same issue as described in the rest of the thread but none of the solutions suggested have worked thus far.

With Photoshop v22 I've now gotten this twice, both on composites with a fair number of layers but nothing crazy.
This time the file is under 1 GB.  Fortunately the "legacy" Save for Web continues to work fine as far as I can tell.
Anyone else seeing this?
As far I as I can tell, this is the nearest thing Adobe has to a place to report bugs that aren't crashes.

No problem. I went back to the previous version and now it's ok. Hopefully the issue is resolved soon!
