When removing the background, this happens with every photo.
The same error appears when using Object Removal as well.

1. Reset Photoshop Preferences: Corrupted preferences can cause unexpected behavior. 2. Adjust Performance Settings: Under Preferences > Performance, fine-tune memory usage and disable Use Graphics Processor temporarily to check if GPU settings are causing issues.

3. Update Software and Drivers: Make sure Photoshop is up to date via the Creative Cloud app, and update your graphics drivers from the manufacturer’s site for compatibility.

4. Manage Scratch Disks and Cache: Free up space on your scratch disks and clear Photoshop’s cache to improve performance and resolve lag or freezing issues.

Hi everyone,

I’m having an issue with Select Subject in Photoshop.

When I click Select > Subject, Photoshop doesn’t select the actual subject.
Instead, it selects a completely wrong area, as shown in the attached screenshot.

What I’ve already tried:

Cleared Photoshop cache

Cleared Photoshop AI cache

Cleared Camera Raw cache

Deleted preferences

Completely uninstalled Photoshop (without keeping presets)

Fresh reinstall

Unfortunately, none of this helped. The behavior stays the same.

Has anyone else experienced this issue recently?
Or does anyone know what might cause Select Subject to behave like this?

Any insight would be appreciated.

PS: I’ve been dealing with this issue for about two weeks now and couldn’t find any helpful information or similar cases online. That’s why I already tried pretty much everything I could think of. Hopefully someone here has an idea or experienced the same problem.

Hi, thanks for the quick response and the detailed steps.

Unfortunately, none of the suggested solutions helped. I already tried resetting preferences, clearing all caches, doing a clean reinstall without keeping presets, and also tested different performance and GPU settings as mentioned.

The issue is still the same.

Thanks for the updates, @Socialweiss, and @csaba_7885. Please check and confirm the default image processing settings from Photoshop > Settings > Image Processing > Select Subject & Remove Background.

Try toggling between Cloud and Device.

This actually fixed the issue. I’ve been stuck with this problem for over a week and couldn’t find anything helpful online. Switching the image processing setting finally solved it.

I’m really glad I decided to post in the Adobe Community.

Thank you for letting us know about this issue. I reproduced the problem with Mac OS 26.3 using Select Subject Device. Are you able to switch to Cloud until this issue is addressed? Go to Photoshop > Settings > Image Processing ... > Select Subject and Remove Background and then switch the option to Cloud.

I am having the same issue. I can't remove the background after updating to the 2026. I might try to reinstall the 2025 version if possible.

try to change Settings>Image Processing>Select subject and Remove Background From "Device" to "Cloud". Not ideal but a good temp fix
